MEW Fire Ordinance Under Consideration

The city fire and water committee weighs a proposed ordinance requiring hotels to install 9 inch electric alarm gongs with buttons in halls and automatic alerts to the fire department. Proponents include Hotel Butler managers and other hotel owners while critics say the plan aids theater operators and may ruin theatre spaces, with a seven foot court requirement. Fire Marshal Kellogg and Building Inspector Place oppose the measure as inadequate and must be rebuilt.
