London reports uncertain official word on the Vladivostok bombardment. Observers believe the Japanese fleet has cut off the Russian squadron from Vladivostok, forcing it toward Pos yet bay and a perilous gauntlet run to Port Arthur or Vladivostok.
March reports claim Russian troops advanced into Korea reaching Song Ching and pushing south along the west coast protected by the Vladivostok fleet. On February 1 Japanese forces occupied Hai Yang Tao but found only coal stores and signals. Russians abandoned the island on February 24.
A large Russian force holds hills in the Antung district preparing for the arrival of Japanese troops. A body of Japanese is expected to reach the left bank of the Yalu river around March 10. The Russian position resembles Boer lines along Tugela.
