Washington June 5 The Senate cleared the way for a gas price probe by empowering the Senate Manufacturers Committee with subpoena powers and funding for recorded hearings. The McKellar investigating resolution was amended to grant these authorities before formal hearings begin.
Redolph Valentino walked free from a bigamy charge after Justice Hanby discharged the case saying no proof of cohabitation had been shown and the statute was unconstitutional. The ruling questions hundreds of similar marriages and leaves Valentino still awaiting remarriage to Winifred Hudnut under future law changes.
In New York and Los Angeles a joint Hays letter to the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America urges immediate progress toward higher moral and artistic standards in production. In Cork on June 5 a British sloop seized the Moore and McCormick steamer Seattle and captured ammunition. Moore and McCormick officials in New York deny any U S ship named Seattle exists and say the Seattle Spirit, built in Seattle, was not seized and carried flour and foodstuffs, with no munitions.
The Rochester special of the Chicago Northwestern struck a truck at Blodgett NL near Chicago today killing two laborers Karl Lee and Frank Whock of Highland Park and injuring nine others.
Crowds fill city hall park as Dr E J Brown is inaugurated at noon. A brief ceremony includes the oath, a police band march, and a reception of cheers as he pledges cooperative, clean government. Outgoing Mayor Caldwell wishes him success.
Mayor Caldwell presented his second annual report to the city council outlining two routes to lower street car fares. He proposed renegotiating the purchase contract to save millions or half the water portion of the price, and suggested wage and service reductions. He also endorsed reestablishing jitneys and urged adopting a commission form of government to manage Seattle's $40 million utility enterprise.
An army board of injury began a further investigation into the slaying of Lieut. Col. Paul Ward Beck, a leading air service figure, with Judge Jean P. Day presiding in Oklahoma City. Closed sessions were held by the board.
Inspector Hans Damm was appointed by Mayor Caldwell on Monday as temporary chief of police until Brown, mayor elect, appoints a successor to Chief Searing who resigned Saturday. W. B. Severyns is expected to take office soon. Capt. C. G. Bannick declined the inspector’s post. Capt. Joe Mason may be offered the job.
Mrs. Suzanine Wier 76 was beaten to death with a hammer in Portland. Her son Walter Wier ? was captured after an attempted self harm and held for questioning. He reportedly said I killed her and neighbors noted concerns about his behavior. An examination of his mental status is planned.
Three men killed and another badly burned when storehouses at Trojan works exploded in San Leandro California this morning. Harry Meyers and Jimmy an office employee were killed at once Antonio Costa died later at the infirmary. Howard Bistein plant superintendent was severely burned with injuries not believed to be fatal.
The week end search for Fred, an ex convict who escaped state sheriffs by eluding capture in a manhunt after assaulting two women, began in Omaha with police expressing scant hope. Brown was seen in Omaha last Saturday evening and may have boarded a freight toward Gibson. No crews were found today.
