The chamber of commerce committee on foreign commerce meets this afternoon to study coastwise laws to include the Philippine islands and a five member congressional mission to probe United States trade in the Orient, along with the ship subsidy bill. Reports are to be drafted for Wednesday's meeting.
The quartermaster's office advertising for tide on 2000 tons of hay to be delivered in Seattle or Tacoma. Delivery location specified with 2000 tons of hay to be supplied this month.
A boat named Athion listing on Bryant and Clark's ways toppled onto its side during hoisting. The vessel was mid incline when the blocking failed. Severe injuries occurred and it is expected days of work and significant expense will be needed to right the vessel.
Lydia J. Willard aged 76 died this morning at her son A W Willard's residence 35 Boren avenue Seattle after bronchitis. Her husband Albert W Willard 89 is prostrated by the shock and may not recover. They had lived in Leavenworth Kansas and Beattie before moving to Seattle three weeks ago to be with their son. The body is in charge of Bonney and Stewart.
North of Woodland Park residents petition the board of health to abate the nuisance from the slaughter house owned by Ninth Ward councilman William H. Murphy. The board will investigate the complaint tonight.
NEWCASTLE Jan 6 L T Terry head storekeeper of the Columbia and Puget Sound railway stores has been appointed postmaster at Newcastle. Terry was formerly connected with BE W Newhall and Co of Beattie.
The Supreme Court refused the habeas corpus request by Captain Carter's attorney. Carter, the officer convicted of frauds tied to Savannah harbor fortifications, is noted in connection with the case. In other news, The Globe Navigation Co of Seattle seeks sugar contracts with Makee Sugar Co to ship via Seattle, aiming for low New York transport rates.
Reports from Liverpool say the Alfonso and the Buaro Expanola collided about 100 miles south of Finisterre in fog. The Alfonso sank quickly with 19 drowned. The Expanda escaped sinking and the crew were rescued by a passing steamer after abandoning ship.
Mary Sacher of Ballard sues W. M. Curtie for 20000 damages alleging defamation of character by statements to several persons that she is reputable and attended a dinner at Low Grashams on Washington Street. John T. Wheatman of Ballard also sues A. W. Preest for 20000 in a similar action.

The action signals a serious challenge by railway officials to the Northern Securities Co. and suggests the fight will be protracted beyond a bluff.
Healey was fined $25 and costs by Justice Cann after being found guilty of assault and battery on jeweler Thomas Carroll. Evidence showed a dispute in Carroll's Columbia street shop led to a behind the back strike near the alley between Second and Third avenues. Witness RK Brown testified Healey struck Carroll from behind.

The steamer Rosalie failed to sail to Victoria due to a cylinder defect and passengers were moved to the Majeatic which departed at 8:30 this morning. Earlier the Rosalie showed low steam near Port Townsend and took five hours to reach that port on the return trip. Also listed are issued marriage licenses for Edward OBrien and Isabella Bolaton both Seattle residents and Ed Holland with Nora Violet Primell both Seattle residents.
