A bank in East St. Louis was robbed by masked men who forced open the vault after seven hours of drilling. They took currency and gold, escaped on horses, and fled the city as police swarmed the area. Estimates vary, with figures from several thousand to over $36,000 or more.
The Minnesota Supreme Court granted leave to file a bill of complaint on a state matter involving the Northern Pacific and Northern Railways over freight rates. The case cites restraint and unlawfulness of rates and grants permission to the state to proceed against the Securities Company.

A Johannesburg dispatch reports Boer losses in the past week at 36 killed or wounded, 261 captured and 73 surrendered. In northeast Cape Colony Boer strength is described as greatly reduced. An engagement on Jan 3 between Lum ber and Chris Bother forced the Tigers from their position with significant British casualties. Maj. Valentine and 14 men were killed, along with five officers and 28 men wounded.
The civil service commission prepared a warning reinforcing the city charter ban on political activity by municipal workers. Heads of departments were instructed to ensure employees refrain from participating in the upcoming election.

Union workers retired the strike on the Denny building project. Non union electricians at Sunset Telephone One were replaced by union crews. Job steward W. W. Rolfe said office wiring done by non union electricians will be torn out and reinstalled by unions, at the occupants' expense.
The steamer Athlon keeled over while being hauled on Bryant and Clark's ways at Ballard. It righted itself and was launched this afternoon. The mishap caused little damage with hardly a scratch evident after the raise.
The city comptroller announces a correction in registration deadlines for the municipal election. Books must close by midnight February 11, two days before the election, with voters needing one year in state, three months in county, and 20 days in precinct residency. Estimated total registrations near 16 000.

George Bilia of Jefferson Hall reported to police this morning that 8 cents and a hatchet were stolen from his bed last night. The unusual detail is the hatchet found in the bed.
The Dispatch from San Francisco arrived with two survivors Johnson and Odlund of the wrecked Walla Walla. Captain Johnson and officers kept them aboard rather than land them illegally, and the shipmate recounts救the rescue of 67 people at Mendocino and Eureka while praising nurse Gertrude Cadien.
Wreck of the Walla Walla leaves several survivors headed north aboard the Umatilla. Passengers named include T. W. Stream and his wife mother, F. W. Daley, A. B. McLellin, A. Mydenbauer and relatives, plus steerage travelers. Missing remain unaccounted for and feared lost. Captain W. H. Weaver of the Roanoke lies critically ill in Eureka after injuries and exposure from the disaster.
