Deming to profit from large salmon cannery deal
In Bellingham on August 20, Deming, a cannery manager and stockholder in Pacific American Fisheries, is linked to a deal that would net about a quarter of a million dollars for his group. The cannery holds 225,000 cases, valued at six dollars per case, with an estimated yearly profit of three dollars per case, yielding roughly seven hundred thousand dollars over three weeks. The plant, bought for 310,000 from the defunct Pacific Packing & Navigation, was acquired by creditors led by W A Peters, with Deming contending against eastern capitalists. A new firm Pacific American Fisheries is run by Deming and key stockholders J J Hui and Swift. The run season saw the company control most prime traps on Puget Sound, using surplus fish to aid weaker canneries and cover running expenses.
