Wounded American Sailor Shot While Poaching Sealing Grounds
Walter York, 22, a boat puller on the schooner Carmebella, was shot on August 2 near Copper Island seizing grounds in the Bering Sea. A 45-70 rifle disabled him, injuring his upper lip and teeth. He was taken to Dutch Harbor and then Providence hospital for surgery to remove a ball lodged near the back of his head. York is from Edwar Springs Missouri.
