Kuropatkin to launch aggressive offensive against Japanese

A telegram from General Kuropatkin, dated Liao Yang, says he will begin an offensive against Japan. The Trans Siberian line suffers washouts from rains. Kuropatkin commands 185000 men and 120 guns are en route to support the push. Russian reports also claim heavy Japanese casualties at Port Arthur and fortifications on Wolfs hill.

Riot at yards as Armour faced strikers and packers meet

Ogden Armour narrowly escaped a mob while police cleared a disorderly gathering near the stock yards. Packers convened a meeting and set a three person committee to confer with a peace committee. Fifty strike breakers protested in sympathy with leader Frank Norris, who was discharged for smoking in sleeping quarters.

Askold Will Quit and the Russian Crew Is Glad of It

Reports from Shanghai and Peking say Emperor Nicholas ordered disarmament of the cruiser Askold and the torpedo boat destroyer Grozovoi. Chinese officials refused extra delays, and dismantling will occur before Sunday under customs supervision.

Still More Washouts Hit Santa Fe Main Line

San Bernardino California August 25 The Santa Fe main line is washed out indefinitely by ongoing storms and electrical disturbances. Fire and debris along miles of rails halt traffic with repairs repeatedly destroyed. Overlands diverted to Southern Pacific. Arizona service unlikely before Saturday. Knights Templars trains stalled east of here. Needles cut off from the West as miles of track are torn away.

Valuables Recovered From City Theft Suspect

John Harrison confessed to multiple thefts after arrest and identified locations where much of the stolen booty had been hidden. Police searched his room and other sites he named and recovered a large quantity of loot.

Drowning rescue on bridge saves mother and child

Mrs George Babis and her 4 year old son George Babis Jr were saved from drowning shortly after 1 PM Tuesday by Joe Harzot and Charley Start both locals. The incident occurred on a bridge between West Seattle and Alki Point when the boy fell into the water. Start jumped in first and reached the child while Harzot swam to assist the mother who had also entered the water. Both were brought safely ashore.

Grant Street Water Main Appropriation Approved 7 to 1

At a noon special meeting the council approved about 5000 from the general fund for Grant Street water main construction. The total project cost is 22434 with Daulton the sole opposing vote. The finance committee was asked to consider an ordinance authorizing a 300 general fund allotment for deepening and cleaning.

Green Lake Boulevard Plan Sparks City Bid Choreography

Ravenna park creek would lower Green Lake water level to ease Green Lake boulevard construction. Seattle Bicentric company to pay 200 dollars, Greenlake property owners 100 dollars. Funds to be drawn from general fund after city receipt. Burnett's auto speed ordinance also introduced for Streets Committee review.

Steamer Detained Off Cape Vincent by Russian Cruiser

An Anchor Line steamer traveling from Liverpool to Calcutta was held for two hours off Cape Vincent by the Russian cruiser Ural. After inspection of papers and cargo the vessel was released to proceed. London reports say Premier Bal four met a chamber of commerce deputation to discuss Russian molestation of British shipping.

Three Steamers Sail for the Orient in September

The steamers Quite Lyra and Kanagawa will sail for the Orient in early September with cargoes of American goods to Japan China and the Philippines. The Kanagawa is set for September 1, Quito for September 4 and Lyra for September 6.

German Woman Seeks Guardian Over Drunken Husband

In police court Mrs. Carl Windell asked to be guardian of her incompetent husband after years of supporting seven children by washing. He inherits about $3,000 but spends on alcohol. court would control funds while Windell remains dependent. Windell’s drinking periods have ranged from two days to two months.
