Dispatches report Japanese forces poised to capture Port Arthur as they press a costly assault. Gen Kuropatkin abandons Liao Yang, amid a claim Liao Yang will soon fall. Russians detain interior produce as Nehowhwang dispatch notes Japanese advance.
Telegrams report Japanese artillery closing on Port Arthur defenses at Chefoo. Refugees say the fortress is near collapse with Japanese positions between Golden Hill and the town and control of Taiping Tee. Consular meetings address Shanghai tensions as Russia plans to disarm its ships.
Secretary Trenholm of the Western Steamship Company calls a newspaper report about ships on the San Francisco to Seattle run a fabrication. He says the company has not considered the idea and has not discussed placing steamers on the route this winter.
The Lipton cup race starts in San Diego with six entrants including Detroit, Venus, Mischief, Marie, Nackey, and Katrella. Wind is light and visibility hazy as fleets set out on a 12 mile triangular course.

In Beripes News Arend Sedalia Missouri on August 23 a farmer named Orr and W T Morris a real estate dealer exchanged revolver fire over a money dispute. Morris was seriously wounded and Orr is dying.

A blaze near Ferry Idaho yesterday devastated a timber yard and several buildings including switch boards and dwellings. Firefighters and residents escaped danger as losses were put at 25,000 dollars.

Union printers and janitors complain they cannot enter yards to work. strikers draw a line restricting both union and non union. Mrs Elisabeth Burger filed suit in the superior court for divorce from Frederick Burger alleging cruelty and violent treatment. She also sought a temporary restraining order to prevent selling stock to the family grocery store and to bar the defendant from molesting her and the children.
Coroner Hoye held an autopsy on the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hort after the body was found in bed at their Coroner Hove home. The autopsy reported smothering but the coroner favors an accidental death, while Mrs. Rosalie Gordon suggests foul play and questions the father’s involvement. Hort protested the insinuations, claiming the child likely pulled blankets over his face while his mother slept. The infant was described as puny and poorly nourished.
Burnside delays splicing the Seattle Sitka cable awaiting pickup from the Burnside due to dense fog. Officials plan ceremonies at West Point with 1,000 attendees aboard the Umatilla, then transfer to the Burnside for the event. Speeches by Mayor Balinger, Flynn, Meikle, and military officers expected. Wagner's band to play.
