Treasury officials uncover a large smuggling operation at Nogales Arizona involving Collector Hoey and two Chinese inspectors. They allegedly facilitated entry of Chinese laborers into the United States for bribes of 50 to 200 dollars each. The scheme implicated most Nogales customs and immigration officers and a secret-service sting captured the extent of the corruption.
In Norwood West Virginia Justice Crider faced Emma Franklin and Anna Taylor for fasting when Phil Franklin arrived with a Winchester threatening to release his wife or kill officers. Crider drew his 44 caliber revolver and fired fatally wounding Phil Franklin as the trial continued.

In Stockton California on August 24 a collision occurred at Kentucky Island in the San Joaquin river. The passenger steamer Dauntless holed eight feet in her hull and sank within minutes. the Mary Garrett was uninjured. Passengers and crew were rescued and taken to Stockton and the Walker. Dauntless belongs to the Union Transportation Co of San Francisco. Loss estimated at $60,000.
