Washington Aug 11 The house ways and means committee cut 555 million from the nation tax bill and raised a dependent exemption to 400 dollars per person instead of 200 The committee repealed the 8 percent tax on Pullman fares and taxes on passenger and freight charges It also repealed stamp taxes on patent medicines perfumery and drugs replacing them with a 5 percent tax on manufacturers It levied 15 cents a gallon on cereal beverages and two cents a gallon on fruit juices and syrups paid by manufacturers replacing soda taxes.
Springfield, Aug 10. Governor Len Small, awaiting trial on charges of misusing state funds, said he would strike back at character assassins he claims are trying to ruin him. He announced plans to exhibit to the public the ramifications of protected vice and crime related to his prosecution.
Patrolman J H Thomas arrested 32 year old James Williams at his home on 2317 E John St Wil liams attempted to discard a key into tall grass but the key clattered on the pavement. The key opened a trunk containing a complete opium outfit including pipes and several cans of opium. Williams is jailed on possession of opium charges.
