The plan orders a net $555 million tax reduction with $277 million from rich taxpayers via excess profits and related taxes. The Massachusetts attorney general accuses District Attorney Nathan A. Tufts of malfeasance over a 1917 Eden revela affair at Mishawup manor and a 1918 Cambridge trapping raid. Mrs Stearns, now Helen Weaver Sewall, testifies Tufts did not arrange or suggest sending a seductress, denying the trap claim.
Police investigate George Halliday’s assault on a dark street where a blackjack was used and a small amount of change was stolen. A hospital report was not filed with police, prompting Inspector Mans Damm to promise a full review amid other similar incidents and missing records.
A Star survey shows Seattle tourist travel rising with auto camps and camping grounds drawing 35 to 60 percent more visitors. Hotels and railroads report declines as auto travel reduces train and hotel occupancy, with May to July passenger totals plunging from 214,225 to 90,262. Portland touts its auto camp as a national model while Seattle and neighboring areas face shifting tourism patterns.
Police raided 1926 Terry Ave arresting four suspects and seizing liquor amid a booze party. A resident reported a brutal attack on Marie Cummings, who identified Blondie Butler as the alleged operator. Butler admitted the assault. Cummings to city hospital with head injuries. Woodworth and his wife also detained on disorderly conduct charges.
Miss Florieda Batson of New Orleans burst onto the cinder path and established a new world mark in the 60 yard hurdles for women. She already held the 60 yard dash record and has run 100 yards in ten seconds. At a New York carnival she shaved another fifth of a second from the hurdles record, clocking nine seconds.
James E. Mahoney faces a possible death penalty as prosecutors press for it after his arraignment in Judge Hall's court. The case centers on the murder of Mrs Kate Mahoney and the body viewing drew crowds, with officials noting Mahoney’s nerve wavering then recovering. A letter praising the police force highlighted officers involved in the investigation and response.
Dr. G T Harding aged 76, father of the president, married Miss Alice Severns 52, a nurse, in Monroe Michigan then Marion Ohio. The couple described the ceremony as sudden and simple with plans to settle at the old home in Marion.
Detective Cleary of headquarters lost the first finger of his right hand during a long search for the Mahoney murder trunk. He was part of the patrol boat detail and suffered a splinter wound from a wire cable, leading to blood poisoning and eventual amputation to save the hand. His condition was reportedly improved Friday.
Paris report states the League of Nations supreme council decided to reinforce Upper Silesia to maintain order amid the dispute. The move follows a bending adjustment announced officially today and aims to stabilize the region.
An early Friday fire targeted sleeping quarters in a South Park church, believed set by a firebug as Father Bebee barely escaped. In Birmingham, Rev. Edwin R. Sisson faced murder charges in the slaying of Father James E. Coyle. Police investigate linked church arsons and violence as Page 9 continues.
