Clara Newell a 17 year old girl living in Auburn was attacked by four hoboes on the road outside Auburn Sunday night. She was found Monday night in woods with hobo Thomas Long, who said he protected her. She was robbed of $18 and jewelry and taken to wear men’s clothes. Long is a prosecuting witness. two other hoboes remained at large.
United Press reports Eugene Myer head of the War Finance Corporation testified before the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee on a railroad credits bill. He said it would immediately hire 200,000 men to build railroad equipment and spur demand for fuel and materials, aiding reopening of idle industries. It would also improve farm markets, unlock frozen credit, accelerate rate reductions, and boost government revenues through wider business activity.
At Mare Island California slated for commissioning tomorrow at 1 15 p m. The battleship California will raise the flag and begin her maiden watch under Captain Ziegmeier on the bridge. A cruise is planned for October with Magdalena Bay or Monolulu as destination.
Mrs J J Barnett claims to have first seen the Mahoney trunk as it floated down Union bay and notified the police. She says two women witnesses corroborate her account. The Star says the police were informed and the reward of 2000 dollars remains offered for the trunk find and any rightful claimant.
