The Federal Trade Commission charges American Tobacco Company with false advertising in Luckies claims. It alleges statements that Luckies are toasted, have more exclusive smokers, less acidity, throat protection, and lower nicotine are untrue. The complaint seeks a desisting order and continues on page two.
Citizens are urged to attend a town meeting Saturday October 3 at 7 30 hosted by Seal Beach officials. John Gustin regional supervisor of the War Price and Rationing Board will speak on critical rationing duties and keeping the local board from being moved. Gustin's visit last week highlighted needed cooperation to preserve local administration and prevent future lines for rationed goods.
WPA workers ready to remove old Pacific Electric rails from Ocean Avenue and Main Streets for war production use. Work to start almost immediately, expected to take about two weeks, with streets restored to good condition after 96 tons of steel rails are removed.
Mayor Jessie W. Reed proclaims October 4 1942 as Fire Prevention Week urging councils of defense schools and public agencies to join fire agencies in eliminating fire hazards through education and action amid California's severe fire risk and arson concerns.
Last Thursday night fifteen soldiers stationed in the Seal Beach area dined at city hall with members of the American Legion Post 300 and Auxiliary Unit 300. A rabbit dinner was served, cigarettes donated by City Treasurer C Z Irvine, and music by Mrs Alyce Dowle enhanced the evening.
The first in a series of incident drills conducted Tuesday night by the Civilian Defense organization was deemed successful by Coordinator Arthur T. Perks. The exercise tested regular and auxiliary police, firemen, utilities workers, air raid wardens, and medical staff to confirm presence, post coverage, and equipment adequacy.
Police Judge Fred J. Smith reported September fines totaling $625.88 for Seal Beach. Of this sum $590.88 was added to the street fund and $35 to the general fund. $68.38 came from prior fines. Twenty five traffic cases yielded $322.50. three drunken driving convictions produced $300 with $200 paid, benefiting the street fund. Three minor traffic violations added $5 and three intoxication cases contributed $30, $35 of which went to the general fund.
October 1 to 19 designated as Extra Effort Salvage Drive in Seal Beach. Pupils of Seal Beach Elementary will participate with details explained by Superintendent J. H. McGaugh. Residents urged to gather scrap metal rubber rags and rope and place on the salvage pile opposite city hall or on Friday morning pickups.
A peripatetic flying fish far from Catalina waters was caught off Seal Beach pier Tuesday afternoon by C. S. McDowell of Layton California. His relative S. E. Carley of Seal Beach watched the event. The rarity was taken to Lescher's Bait Store on Main Street for display.
Russell O Rea rson of Mr and Mrs Harry O Rea r completed a thirteen week course in the Commisary Steward s School in San Diego and graduated as an honor student in a class of 130. He has been home on leave at 1310 Ocean avenue and will return to his ship Tuesday amid calls that the leave was too short.
Commodity prices rise as the county salary ordinance is amended by the Board of Supervisors. The board rejected a blanket increase sought by Supervisor West and adopted targeted relief for some workers, but no overall raise went into effect. West criticized the piecemeal changes as insufficient amid rising costs.
Police Chief Lee Howard announces the addition of John Andrew Holst to the Seal Beach Police Department. Holst, 242 Seventh Street, begins a 90 day probation tonight with no prior police experience. Nora Thomas, wife of the city maintenance foreman, becomes police matron today and the couple will move into city hall housing. Chief Howard also notes 34 arrests in September with 25 convicted and nine pending. city licenses brought in $35.
The Orphan Annie led Junior Commandos and junior firemen cleaned up vacant lots south of the P. E. tracks last week. They removed papers scrap metal and salvage for the war effort with help from city officials volunteers and advisors. The effort ran Thursday through Monday culminating in a noon gathering at the pier entrance sun room.
