Orange County political hopefuls, 58 in number, gathered at Huntington Beach Memorial Hall for the Orange County Association Chambers meeting to vie for August primaries. Audience of 165 heard brief platforms with Dan Patch drawing the loudest response. Local attendees included C. A. Miller, F. W. Hickman, Judge Fred Smith, Herman Drent, and Elmer J. Hughes, with Mrs. Patch and Patch's daughters representing Sunset Beach.
The Seal Beach Navy Relief drive quota under Mrs. Clarence Brown is set at 300 dollars. Donations listed include Earl McDuffy ten, Larry Gardner five, Mrs J R McKinney three, Walter Stortz three, Mott's Cafe three, Toni Singleton two and a half, Constance Brown two and a half, Mary Cirvice one, Harry Harsha-eyo one, Jessie Reed one, Fred Smith one, Orilla Bigelow one, Mrs Max Henkey one, Irvine one. House to house canvassing by Navy wives or volunteers begins this week.
R William Bender of 115 12th street receives congratulations on completing his Merchant Marine Chief Officer exams and obtaining an unlimited license. Since Pearl Harbor he has sailed as Second Officer on S S Pat Doheny between Los Angeles and the Hawaiian Islands for Richfield Oil. He now enjoys a family vacation while awaiting orders to serve as Chief Officer on another Naval Command under way.
Three traffic accidents last Sunday injured five people in Seal Beach. A collision at Tenth and Ocean involved Peter Breatore and his family from Los Angeles and Charles B. McKenzie from Los Angeles. Mrs. Breatore broke her nose and Rosalie suffered a minor head injury. A Bolsa Road and Bay Boulevard crash near Long Beach involved Dorothy Nelson and Harry Olson versus Jane Robert Yung. both cars overturned but occupants escaped with bruises. A minor collision at Highth and Central caused no injuries.
A fire at the Garden Motel on Eighth Street near the Highway was started by forgotten cigarettes left by a late night party in a cabin. Officers Pearson and Whittington found the blaze about 4 am. the fire department arrived to finish extinguishing it. The occupants reportedly left about midnight, failing to extinguish cigarette butts in an ash tray.
Robert W. Swigart is promoted to lieutenant after graduating July 25 from the Air Forces Advanced Flying School at Williams Field Chandler Arizona.
Scrap iron and steel were stated to account for half the weight of major weapons like battleships, tanks, and anti air guns, as propaganda urged public participation in war scrap drives against Japan.
Charles May Jr. of 716 North Kingsley Drive Los Angeles was fined $100 by Police Judge Fred J. Smith for driving while intoxicated. He was arrested Sunday July 19th by Officers Parson and Whittington and paid $50, agreeing to pay the remaining $50 within 30 days.
The rationing board last Friday extended the tire quota allowing fourteen recaps to defense workers and farmers in the area rather than the usual four or five. Tire orders and one tube were issued to listed individuals and ranches in Seal Beach Los Alamitos Westminster and surrounding communities.
A group of women traveled to Santa Ana on July 23 to donate blood for the Red Cross Blood Bank. Named donors include Mrs. R. L. Street, Mrs. Lyford Patterson, Mrs. R. L. Crow, Mrs. Genevieve Best, and Mrs. Edna Ball. A second donor trip will occur in August with dates to be announced. Edna Ball serves as local blood donor chairman and has secured additional volunteers.
A city wide drive starts Friday August 7 to collect scrap iron steel and other salvage materials for war needs. Local Salvage Committee chair A W Armstrong says the effort supports national targets with depots at City Hall and two collection sites. Additional materials include brass copper aluminum lead rubber rope and fats as part of the intensifying war effort.
Seal Beach Post No 300 and its auxiliary installed new officers in solemn ceremonies at city hall as memories of World War I and the 3000 annual U.S. war dead lingered. The event highlighted the Legion’s symbols and its enduring mission to guard liberty and justice.
Seal Beach officials announced the USO drive closure with a total of 518.52 raised. Of this, 483.77 has been forwarded to the USO, while 34.75 was collected in local jars. The city fell about 80 dollars short of the 600 quota.
Philip Norton announces permits secured for ten defense houses on Seventeenth Street Seal Beach. Each five room home includes a garage and will be built under the defense housing program directed by Norton.

Applications for the paid post of Secretary to the local War Price and Rationing Board will be accepted at the Board meeting at 10 00 a m Friday July 31 in the city hall courtroom.
