Seal Beach may join three Orange County cities receiving federal civilian defense gear. A local property officer must be named and bonded for 5000 dollars, and the city must sign an agreement with the Director of Civilian Defense in Washington. Title to assets stays with the federal government. The kit includes medical gear, drugs, bandages, instruments, and supplies for a casualty station, with a possible front end pump for the fire station.
Red Cross seeks volunteers to roll bandages at headquarters. Women are urged to come Wednesday afternoons after one o clock. The shift move from Thursday afternoons to Thursdays after this week.
Gadgeteer owners and supporters threaten resistance after filing six petitions with 191 signatures to stop a proposed ordinance banning pinball and similar gambling devices in Seal Beach. The Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce backs action, while validity of some signers is questioned as residents. Council delayed vote after receiving petitions opposing the ordinance and following instruction to city attorney Dana Williams.
The city clerk Mrs Ollie Padrick will be in city hall to assist registrations on Wednesday July 15 and Thursday July 16 from 7:00 to 9:00 p m for those unable to register.
Police Chief Lee Howard listed five arrests during the week for minor offenses including one drunk driving case one intoxication and disturbance of the peace and two dimout restric tions violations by speeding. Leo Williams Coons of Long Beach posted a 150 bond after a driving while intoxicated arrest and faces a July 20 court plea. Russell New of the Trailer Park was fined 15 for intoxication and disturbing the peace after a July 4 arrest for horn noise. Agnes Lederman of Long Beach fined 10 and Carl M. Schak of Anaheim Landing 20 for dimout speeding. A new first aid station on Electric Avenue proved its efficiency when Lloyd White of Los Angeles was rescued from the Anaheim Landing bridge after a crash.
Lloyd White a shipyard worker from 619 North Kenmore Street Los Angeles returned from Pearl Harbor took a late night ride to relax and crashed through a guard rail on Electric Avenue at Anaheim Landing. He sustained fractured ribs and chest injuries and could not explain the cause, stating he had not been drinking.
Malcolm H Botford of 1556 Second Avenue San Diego crashed through a gate at City Yards Friday night while rushing to Long Beach after hearing his grandfather died. He missed the turn on Electric Avenue near Second Street. His coupe had minor damage. A property damage claim was filed and he was scheduled to appear in local justice court July 18. He was uninjured.
The defense commission, authorized by the city council, began upgrading city hall chambers and the Seal Beach police department quarters with plyboard and mattresses to shield against bomb concussion in case of an air raid.
F. W. Hickman, secretary of the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce, tendered his resignation as Defense Council Secretary after discussions. The City Council split two to two on a $2100 annual salary, leaving the decision unsettled as the resignation awaits council action. The debate highlighted two schools of thought on whether to fund a paid secretary or rely on unpaid volunteers.
City officials surveyed insurance on municipal properties amid air raid fears. City Hall now carries full value coverage of 39000 dollars under Avery Insurance Company of Long Beach. Remaining city properties including pipes and sewage plants are being surveyed to determine required insurance for war damage.
