Local Agencies Aid Salvage for Victory Drive

Seal Beach residents are urged to join a scrap drive led by the Seal Beach Post of the American Legion. Six local salvage groups accept papers metals rubber rags bottles tin foil and clothing to return materials to industry and raise funds for participating organizations. A city truck collects curbside scrap every Friday morning for sorting by the Salvage Committee, a group of men over 65.

Chief Knighton Demonstrates Fire Bomb Fighting

Fire Chief W. S. Knighton spent three nights this week teaching the proper method to extinguish incendiary bombs. He cautioned residents to safeguard homes as fire protection may be limited in emergencies. The magnesium bomb weighs about two pounds and ignites on impact, not exploding. Do not spray a solid stream. use a fine spray or cover the fire with sand. Best method if possible is to cover with sand and place in a bucket. Foamite or soda-acid water extinguishers can be used. never use Pyrene or carbon tetrachloride on magnesium bombs due to poisonous gas.

Twins to Attend American Legion Boys State June 20

The twin sons of Mr and Mrs Pete Ekberg of Seal Beach were chosen to represent their city at the American Legion Boys State to be held at Davis Agricultural College north of Sacramento from June 20 to 27. Jack and Pete Ekberg, 17, were born in Seal Beach. Local supporters note past attendees now serve in the armed forces and credit Boys State with public service and defense preparation. Harold Voight, local Boys State chairman, awaits a Department Adjutant visit for a photo and feature in Legionnaire and National Magazine.

Victory Vegetables To Vie With Violets At Flower Show

Seal Beach invites growers to compete in the 1942 Flower Show at Civic auditorium on May 19 from 2 to 9 30 pm. Vegetables and flowers will share general divisions with arrangements, and organizers urge entries from local exhibitors of all levels. Mrs Henry S Newton chairs the garden committee of the Seal Beach Woman's Club and promises complete classifications soon.

Two Local Boys Join United States Marines

Two local youths Tom Tarentine and Stan Kruh have joined the U.S. Marines. They departed April 21 for the San Diego Marine Base to begin training after a farewell party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Howard. Guests included Bill Vessey Hal Shoemaker Kathleen Reep Ernest Kronkite Peggy Christianson Arthur Drent and the hosts.

Flower show displays setup in auditorium

Displays are moved to the auditorium from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on flower show day. Assisting Mrs. Newton are Mrs. Martha Nikols Mrs. Susan Carter and Mrs. Nadine Hickman. Another committee member may be appointed to replace Mrs. Mary Taylor who cannot serve this year due to a broken leg.

Sug ar ration books to be issued in Seal Beach district

Supt McGaugh urges early registration for sugar rationing books to be issued next week at Seal Beach school auditorium. Books will be distributed Monday to Thursday May 4 5 6 7 from 1 pm to 8 30 pm. One sheet per family unit may cover all members. individuals must pick up their own if not in a family unit.

Star Club will sponsor a Tiny Piper dinner at the Civic Auditorium on May 25. The dinner begins at 6 30 p.m. Tickets are fifty cents and go on sale next week.

Past Commanders and Auxiliary Presidents To Be Honored

Thirteen Past Commanders of Seal Beach Post of the American Legion and ten Past Auxiliary Presidents of Unit 300, plus parents of all Legionnaires, will be guests at the annual dinner on Saturday evening May 9 at Civic Auditorium. The event, held the day before Mother's Day, will honor listed Commanders and Auxiliary presidents with Mae Holliday in charge of the Auxiliary dinner. Tickets at 50 cents are on sale to Legion members by Roy Thomas.

Yellow Alert Signals Possible Blackout For Seal Beach

A yellow alert flashed to the Seal Beach police Wednesday morning April 29 at 4 00 pm with the all clear at 4 30 am The alert warns of a possible blackout but is not sent to Civilian Defense agencies which are mobilized only on a blue alert that did not occur Wednesday morning.

War Ration Book Registration Preparations and Personnel

A World War II era notice outlines requirements for applying for War Ration Book No 1. It urges households to prepare a memorandum of each member’s height weight eye and hair color and age. A trained staff led by J H McGaugh and including many assistants will handle registrations with locations and staff names listed.
