Chamber Seeks More Bus Stops for War Workers

Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce aims to press state and local officials for a resolution to allow all busses to pick up passengers along their routes for Douglas plant workers. Current franchises bar Greyhound Pacific Electric and Santa Fe from pickups. A special council committee will study annexation and beach-use plans pending army guidance.

Army Officers Stress Ground Observation Corps Value

About 200 observers heard Lt. Col. John C. Gray and Lt. Paul Shantz outline the vital role of the Aircraft Warning Service ground observation corps. Gray cited efficient manning as essential civilian defense preventing bomb damage and aiding air raid wardens, firemen, and allied agencies, likening the work to coast artillery in the integrated defense program.

Public Schools Week was observed Thursday at Seal Beach Elementary School sponsored by R E Dolley lodge F and A M No 616 and civic groups. The program opened with the school orchestra, a girls glee club performance, a marimba duet, and a seventh grade play Anne Gets a Break.

Seal Beach Denied Priority for New Fire Truck

Fire Chief W S Knighton said Seal Beach cannot obtain a new fire truck after the War Production Board denied a priority-number request. The board cited victory material demands, noting the city delayed adopting fire equipment funding and followed late council actions and investigations, causing the loss of the order.

War Time Price Controls and Rationing Announced

Price administrator Henderson issues war time price ceilings effective May May 11 for manufacturers wholesalers and May 18 for retailers with records from March to be kept. May 12 to May 14 gasoline ration cards distributed in 17 eastern states and DC. President heralds global air and sea combat with bases in Australia New Zealand and the Middle East and promises recaptured territory.

Registration to End Tonight at 8 30 Boards Efficiency High

Seal Beach district reports 2496 people registered and 2411 War Ration Book No 1 copies issued as registration closes its doors at 8 30 pm on Thursday May 7. Opening day Monday saw 651 applications and 631 books issued. Tuesday counted 977 applications and 952 books. Wednesday logged 868 applications and 828 books. Early Thursday morning the survey shows strong participation under J H Menugh district superintendent.

Free Tubercular Examinations Set for May 28

Free fleuroscopic examinations will be given by the tuberculosis association here on May 28 with time and place to be announced later in the Post and Wave. The service benefits school children defense workers and other adults who wish to avail themselves of the examination, said Mrs Clarissa Fowler Seal Beach Elementary School nurse.

Air Raid Horn Test Scheduled for Seal Beach Saturday

Seal Beach residents may hear a test of a new air raid horn at noon Saturday May 16 if the state Office of Civilian Defense approves. The city filed for permission ten days ahead to test the device aimed at covering dead spots in the northeast area and at Anaheim Landing.

Registration success praised by McGaugh at local drive

McGaugh credits registration success to registration board workers and community cooperation after 2 496 applications in three days. On Wednesday 1 to 5 15 PM applications ran at 190 per hour and the board expects 350 per hour on Thursday.
