Seal Beach Blacks Out 100 Percent After Warning Siren

Seal Beach coordinated a 100 percent blackout within 20 minutes after a warning siren. Residents avoided using telephones, keeping lines free for business. Air raid wardens, auxiliary police, fire department members, and watchers posted within 10 minutes of the alert. The Civilian Defense Council remained active, hear­ing county updates, and discussed a plan to survey homes for under ten children in case homes are destroyed. No fireworks plan noted. Governor Olson indicated no fireworks.

Thomas Named City Maintenance Foreman

Roy M. Thomas is appointed city maintenance foreman to replace C J Norton who left March 6 to serve in the armed forces. Thomas will be paid 200 dollars a month retroactive to his start date and will serve until the new council reorganizes after the April 14 election. Frank Briton sought the post but was deemed qualified only for water, sewage, and street work duties.

Salvage for Victory Campaign Activates Local Depot

A. W. Armstrong leads the Salvage for Victory drive urging residents to donate scrap from peanut shells to old gum. The depot at Thirteenth Street and Electric Avenue seeks volunteers, especially Fridays and Saturdays, with tight guidelines on damp papers and wrapped materials to avoid parkway blocking.

City Election Week Events Highlight Local Activities

Anaheim Bay Project Puts Seal Beach in National Magazine

Seal Beach and its Anaheim Bay beach acquisition and improvement project gain national notice in Shore and Beach, the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association publication. The piece, titled The Remarkable Program in California, was prepared by F W Hickman of the Seal Beach Chamber of Commerce. The issue, planned for October 1941, appeared in January 1942.

Seal Beach Adopts War Time Tire Protection Plan

Seal Beach city council adopted a five point program for wartime motorists urged by the Automobile Club of Southern California. A sticker form will be issued for 500 car owners, with the Chamber of Commerce distributing them. The creed calls for a 40 mph speed limit, curtailing unnecessary driving, sharing business trips, voluntary tire inspections, and staggered office hours to ease traffic.

School Election Date Changes and Defense Council Vacancies

The Seal Beach School Board moves school election to May 15 with filing by April 18 and three week earlier election date. Four vacancies on the Civilian Defense Council noted after Rev. A J Hurley resigns due to illness. Mayor Elmer J Hughes will fill vacancies. board members Zoeter, Pierpoint, and Wilkerson chair terms and uncertainty on re election.

Rationing Board To Meet Regularly Friday Mornings

Regular meetings of the Rubber Rationing Board are set for every Friday at 10 AM in city hall venues. Applications for tires and tubes may be filed anytime and reviewed at meetings. The board can issue only 25 percent of monthly quota per week and new rules bar recaps or retreads for passenger cars. No tires for A W S. no tire certificates for aircraft ground crew members.
