Hanna cites 3% of 45 states for the Republicans and Payne leads election night operations. Payne projects Illinois carried by about 125000 to 140000 votes with the central west also safe for McKinley.
Ex-Governor Hubert Pattison chaired a Philadelphia meeting at the Academy of Music where vigorous denunciations of England's treatment of Irish political prisoners were voiced. Speakers included Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf of Keneseth Israel, A. K. McClure editor of the Philadelphia Press, and ex-Congressman William McAleer.
Washington report states a congressional committee acted to back Hicks in the contested Republican race for Congress in the Twentieth Pennsylvania district. Bennie from Philadelphia notes party unity urged among Republicans.

Spanish troops gained a route to the hills, built trenches, and repelled daring rebel assaults. Rebels left sixty one dead. Spanish losses included one lieutenant and twenty one soldiers, with one hundred ten wounded.
Chicago reports a noon blaze on Goose Island along the north branch of the river destroying Pacific grain elevator A and B and several nearby frame houses. Wheat totaling over a million bushels, plus logs and corn, suffered heavy losses. buildings and machinery loss nears $300,000. Insurance covers the damage.
In Somerville the Supreme Court sentenced Elmer Claweon the 18 year old who in August killed farmer Harry Hodgwets of Bedminster to be hanged December 16 at the Somerset county jail.
