In Punxsutawney Pennsylvania two desper ate tramps broke into the St Clair residence of the Brink family shooting Mrs Brink and knocking her down. They fled toward Big Run where Constable Billmeyer and Harry Dickey tried to arrest them and were shot at with bullets lodging in Billmeyers arm and a glancing blow on Dickey. The pair escaped.
Alfred H Coombs, his wife, a ten year old son Percy and a Morrill family boy were riding from Tuxbury's Corner to Newton New Hampshire when the horse reared and plunged over an embankment. Mrs Coombs died from head injuries and Mr Coombs may die. Percy is injured internally with slim chance of survival.
Official estimate by George W. Post, Lincoln based Republican State Central committee chairman, forecasts Nebraska voting Republican for state and national tickets with a conservative poll showing a majority of not less than 18,000.
Major McKinley enjoyed a restful day in Canton with his brother Abner. He walked to church and a daytime drive, saying his hardest work may be over though election week will keep him busy. Delegations from Newark, Trenton, Buffalo and New England arrive, with Batchellor, Yarrick, and Dawes visiting the McKinley residence.
A 6 am attempt to wreck a passenger train on the Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul line near Manston failed as enginer Wash Snow smashed through a tie barricade while bullets rained down. No injuries reported and officials pursue suspects. In Yonkers a death case, Hamilton J Andrus, is suspected to be suicide as police cite a severed arm and nearby fragment.
Newport and Covington clubs launch funds to hire top private detectives and attorneys to trace and punish the individuals who insulted Secretary Carlisle. A Covington citizens meeting is called to condemn the outrage and urge mayoral action for swift arrests. Carlisle will be honored with a reception and banquet upon his return.
Saginaw Mich Oct 2 The Central Lumber company's yards at Milwaukee caught fire this evening endangering 150 000 000 feet of lumber and several mills. The town is six miles from this city and telephone communication is interrupted.
The remains of ex-Speaker Charles F Crisp were interred in Oak Grove cemetery Americus Georgia this after noon.
London reports the Right Honorable Frederick Temple D D provincial dean of Canterbury and dean of the chapels Royal has been appointed archbishop of Canterbury and primate of all England. Temple, born November 9 1821, educated at Tiverton grammar, Balliol College Oxford, head master of Rugby from 1868, active in Warwickshire politics supporting disestablishment.

In New Castle Pa on October 25 robbers raided several Wamgee stores and the post office, dynamited the safe, and took stamp cash. The looting yielded a small amount of plunder. Nearby steamship arrivals from New York note Furnessia and Glasgow passages.

Admiral McNair and Asiatic Station officers petition Secretary Herbert to urge Congress to extend thirty year retirement to Navy and Marine personnel, abolishing discrimination against Navy enlisted men. Similar petitions from other squadrons expected. Secretary Herbert may address in annual report.
In Constantinople two Armenian families were arrested on charges of involvement in the Armenian revolutionary drive to collect tribute via a lawyer named Colorian. He met the conspirators who then attacked two police officers at the rendezvous, prompting ongoing arrests and rumors of a large bomb seizure in Pera.
Three hundred Republicans and Democrats depart Market Street Station Newark at six for Canton Ohio. The party, joined by Comptroller Gibson, will greet McKinley and travel via four Pullman sleepers and seven day coaches. They plan to reach Canton by morning and return to Newark by Tuesday afternoon.
Philadelphia October 2. George Wallbridge captain of Lafayette College football team had an appendicitis operation at German Hospital. Surgeons report the operation successful and see no reason wallbridge should not recover.
Washington reports Jesse Burkett heads the National League batting list for players with fifteen or more championship games this season. He maintains a thirteen point lead over his nearest competitor as the 189 season unfolds, highlighting Burkett's standout performance.
