Philadelphia May 7. Murderer Herman W. Mudgett alias H H Holmes was hanged for the death of Benjamin F Pitezel. The execution was quiet and devoid of sensational features. Holmes died without a will or confession and his body was sealed in cement to deter grave robbers. Police and lawyers discuss possible other killings and accomplices as Chicago officials seek truth in the wider Holmes case.
In Indianapolis on May 7 the McKinley forces routing the rival faction led to a platform endorsing McKinley for president and pro honest money. Delegates to the national convention were instructed. A wild scene erupted in Tomlinson Hall as supporters clashed before the vote. General Harrison reportedly did not address the convention.

Cleveland May 7 The Methodist general conference adopted a compromise on women delegates rights after Dr A J Kyett presented an eligibility report. Delegates may keep seats for now but no precedent set with a review due within four years on a similar amendment. Prolonged applause greeted the vote.
The Ohio Supreme Court rules in favor of Jacob Schmucker who claimed a share of reportedly hidden gold and silver found on the Cadwallader estate farm near Tiffin. He had purchased the farm five years earlier and won the dispute over the treasure against Cadwallader heirs.
Washington May 7 The bond resolution long pending in the senate was agreed to by a vote of 51 to 6. A select committee to investigate government bonds in 1814 1805 and 1806 was replaced by the finance committee. The six Republican and six Democratic senators along with one Populist will form the inquiry. The debate included criticism of cabinet absences and calls to defend free coinage. The House adjourned after a day of procedural moves and remarks on pension bills.

In Paterson New Jersey on May 7 during a Barnum and Bailey parade a runaway wagon hit by frightened elephants caused a stampede. Twenty people were injured and 10 year old Edward Schultz was killed. A Har har Driver watched from a stationary truck as the elephants spooked the pair of horses drawing the wagon.
Four year old Helen Breiter daughter of John Wrester has been in a state of apparent sleep since Thursday night. She has not opened her eyes for six days though she responds to questions about nourishment. Illness traces to a brain affection two weeks prior with no signs of emaciation.
