In Washington on January 27 a Senate session discussed a resolution protesting outrages in Asia Minor and urging protection for Christian minorities. The House considered Berlin treaty aims. amendments to sever ties with Turkey were rejected while support for stronger action remained. A land sale bill and other measures were also reported or passed.
Judge Butler stated the law was constitutional and thus would reverse Judge Dallas, granting no new trial.
Mrs. John L. Waller wife of the ex consul to Tamatave Madagascar now in a French prison petitions Congress through Senator Baker. She denies her husband’s guilt and claims France has unjustly held him for ten months and would have released him if he were a British subject.
New York Jan 27 The National Board of Professional Baseball Players held a special meeting at the Fifth Avenue hotel. Delegates pressed two main topics Eastern league representation on road and minor league hardships from major league drafting practice. A proposed amendment would require withdrawal rights and deposits returned if the major club drafts and then releases a player within set periods. The board’s recommendations go to the February 2 National league meeting. John M Ward’s petition to remove his name from the New York era reserve list was deferred to February 24. Ward and President Freedman were absent.
Frankfort Indiana Jan 27 This afternoon Boma Vanton an attorney was found dead with a bullet hole in the temple and a revolver on the floor. The married widow of many years, Mire Frankie A Meeker of Quinnes ML, deserted him two months after their July 3 149% marriage and filed suit over 1500 misappropriated funds. The note mentions funeral gear and linen. Vanton, age about 8, came to the city in 1875 from Middletown NY and sought to leave his property to his son.
William M. Trels was arrested and turned over to Hamilton County sheriffs. Trels, ex treasurer Peter Farney and his son face grand jury indictments from Aurora for burning the Hamilton County courthouse to cover a cash shortage and to destroy records of Farney’s alleged election defeat.
A two hour clash near Cascorre sees Cuban forces under Major Rodrigues repelling a Spanish column led by Col Miva, with seven Spaniards killed and seven wounded and Cuban losses seven killed and 31 wounded. Reinforcements arrive as Spain deploys ships and officers to Havana.

Residents of Parsons Plains Mill Creek Moosic and nearby towns felt a low rumbling quake about 6 0 o clock tonight. At first suspected a Moonsie Powder explosion but no blast occurred. Telephones and telegraphs spread the report as officials and residents sought a cause. No aftershock had been recorded by press time and no explanation was found.

Meadville Meads tonight reveal Henry Vandergriff, jailed for arson, is actually Harriet Vandergrift a 40 year old woman from Harsbure. She has a 15 year old son, husband deceased, formerly worked as a hired man for David Vetere, quarreled over attention to Vetere’s wife, and the January 18 Peters’ barn fire preceded her illness the next morning.
Wilkes Barre January 27 Broad way hotel at Nanticoke partially destroyed by fire early today. Many inmates narrowly escaped death as flames engulfed the building and its furniture losses are estimated at seven hundred dollars.
A Baltimore and Ohio railroad maintenance of way clerk in Pittsburgh Jan C James Ault was jailed today on charges of padding the bay rella of his department. The report notes losses cited include six allot credits and related improprieties within the division.
