Lot 3 4 pieces 22 inches wide priced at 1.19 after special price. Lot 4 3 pieces 22 inches wide at 1.29 special price. Lot 6 3 pieces 44 inches wide at 1.85.
In Washington on January 28 the senate debated the free coinage substitute with mixed support. Turpie attacked Ottoman tyranny in a memorial on Armenian horror, urging United States leadership in the Monroe doctrine as Britain presses forward. The day also saw bills advancing on foreign affairs and railroad rights, while a violent incident near Huntington ended with a man hanged over mob justice.
General Nelson A. Miles told the Senate coast defenses committee that sea coast cities need immediate protection. He urged adding two artillery regiments or about 2,000 men and estimated total fortification costs at around 90 million dollars. He cited current defenses in New York, San Francisco, and Boston as inadequate.
In Decatur Nebraska on January 24 John Williams died after being shot by his sweetheart Rose Pettle. Williams died despite being cared for by Pettle who claims the incident was accidental and remorseful friends fear she may harm herself. An inquest is expected.
Bluefields West Virginia Jai 28. Alexander Jones a negro desperado of Elk Horn boarded a well bound passenger train at Keyatne last night evidently for trouble. He was taken from the train and riddled with bullets in a swift act of rough justice.
Washington session adopts resolutions for universal suffrage for all citizens and praised Utah and Kentucky milestones. It condemns sectarian links and rejects the so called Woman's Bible while urging Congress and state legislatures to secure full citizenship rights. The body also condemns Armenian massacres and supports Cuban independence efforts.
Lifesavers at Long Branch report that the Campania grounded as well as the St Paul after sighting a large steamer ashore on the morning of the 6th. Surfman Sexton first alerted the station, Chasey Kundgulat signalled from the beach, and the crew prepared a line to the vessel before it backed off.
At Sterrett station near Tallapoosa John Goodwin 45? shot and killed his wife and then killed himself with a double barrel gun. After years of religious fervor his family feared extremes. An eight year old daughter and a six year old son witnessed the tragedy.
A four story wood hotel on Railroad Street in St Johnsbury burned to the ground late today, spreading to the Howe Opera House and threatening nearby structures. Guests escaped with dramatic actions as firemen from Lyndonville aided. One guest, T C Spencer of New York, suffered serious burns to head and hands. The hotel valued at 12000 dollars. Fire brought under control by midnight.
In Bridgeport Connecticut Henry Lang a Brennan’s restaurant cook found a diamond in a bird gizzard value two hundred dollars. The jewel a solid gold setting was reported to the proprietor and will be shared by Lang and Brennan. The turkey came from a large number of birds shipped to the restaurant.
Havana dispatch reports intensified conflict as General Weyler prepares to assume command. Insurgents capture towns with little resistance, while thousands flee or join rebel lines. In Holguin arrests rise and 23 Cristo residents are bound for Africa, prompting tearful scenes at the jail.
Amherst professor Edward A. Grosvenor accuses an Armenian revolutionary committee of inciting revolt to draw European powers into Armenia. Hagop Hagigian rejects the blame, saying Turks and Russians used agents, with some Armenians among them, to stir conflict as a pretext for manipulation.
In New York a cargo of 1,200,000 in gold was removed from the steamship St. Paul just before noon. A large canvass ball was dropped over the bow and tied to the lighter F. R. Sharp to ease unloading. The plan aims to prevent losses if an accident occurs while lowering the treasure. Aft hatch cargo already unloaded. forward section may take two to three days at the current pace.

Hemperly as president and officers including Taylor Griffin as first vice president J B Shriever as second vice president and BE Seavey as secretary The group adopted a constitution and set the next convention for January 6 27 and 28 1897 in Harrisburg.

Pottsville January 2. Car No 6 of Schuylkill Traction ran over and instantly killed a man named John Rusk at the Lehigh Valley Railroad crossing in Ashland this evening. He was generally believed to have been intoxicated.

The German brigantine Maria of Pappenberg, carrying bones and guano from Buenos Ayres, burned at sea on January 11. The crew abandoned ship 1,300 miles from land as gas caused spontaneous fire. Sharks harassed the lifeboat during a three day drift before the Ravenswood rescued Captain Gortmaker and six sailors.

Members include B H Thomas and K R Holden as they compare long term tonnage statistics across major companies. In Bethlehem Pennsylvania thirty tons of ordnance and gun materials were shipped to the U S Army proving grounds at Sandy Hook for testing.
The body of William Miller, watchman at Chham pion Blower and Forge works, burned Saturday night, was found in the rain late this afternoon. An investigation concludes arson is suspected as the blaze damaged the plant near Lancaster. Harrisburg records note a Board of Pardons meeting scheduled for tomorrow with seventeen cases listed for argument.
