In a separate report a Russian seaman dies and two sailors are injured when a colossal wave swamps the vessel Allsawald amid a cyclone.
Pugilist Albert Arthur was shot after a preacher E P Wise pastor of the Church of Christ ordered him out of Wise’s home. Arthur claims Wise used a pistol and fired, the wound considered serious. Wise was arrested on assault charges following the incident in Mansillon Ohio.
The British steamship Ailsawald arriving from Hamburg reports a near swamping last Friday afternoon off Georges Shoal due to a massive tidal wave. Since departing Hamburg the vessel faced heavy weather and extreme seas, pushing crew and passengers to safety precautions.
Toledo January 26 A trusted aide asserts Major Moore George Cox and Charles Kurts struck a deal with Tom Platt to select an anti McKinley delegation for St Louis. The plan foresees passing the radical Ripper bill in Columbus to gain mayoral power and a public office payoff. Cox and Cincinnati allies loom near Foraker and Bushnell as Athens schemes unfold.
Philip Ripley a noted American newspaper man died at Bellevue hospital in New York on January 25 in his sixty ninth year. Born in Hartford he studied at Trinity School and began in journalism then served as a war correspondent from New Orleans reporting on battles of the rebellion. He later worked on several New York papers and wrote editorials under the byline Hurlburt. He was closely connected with Horace Greeley and asked a Connecticut minister to be informed of his death.
The Daily News reports from Constantinople that Sir Philip Currie delivered Queen Victoria's letter to the sultan in a chilly reception, keeping Currie and his dragoman waiting for an hour. Currie caught a severe cold and has been confined to his room since.
In West Grove Pennsylvania on a Friday night a dispute at Mrs Bosale Jackson's house led Georgiana Lumb to fatally stab Henry Coleman with a butcher knife. Coleman died that night and after a coroner's inquest Lumb was jailed awaiting trial. Both were noted as colored.
Mrs Mattie Porter aged 80 was found dead on a farm near Oxford Pennsylvania with three bullet holes in her head and her dress neck cut to conceal a purse of cash. She lived alone, distrusted banks, and carried large sums on her person. Local authorities investigated the fatal shooting and robbery claim.
William Marquette aged 59 arrived from his Cranberry claim with $50 and lost it in poker. The winner agreed to supply a wife to repay the loss, and at 1 p.m. Sunday he was presented to Mary O'Hara, a St. James hotel cook. They married two hours later.
The United Press reports strict censorship in Havana, fear of Weyler's arrival drives the Havana exodus, and General Garcia sails from Philadelphia on a fruit steamer to Cuba with 300 men and arms aboard the Jasof. H B Chase of 526 Quincy Avenue has accepted a commission in the Cuban rebel army and will depart New York City this afternoon at 1 50. He was formerly captain of Company C Thirteenth Regiment and has drilled Culain recruits. Captain W T Rockwell of the North End declined a Cuban commission.

The Boston Evangelical alliance frames the protests to urge the U.S. government to address atrocities against Armenian Christians in the Turkish empire with justice and tolerance as core policy.
The American ambassador to Germany Theodore Runyon died of heart failure in Berlin at one o clock this morning. Born October 26, 1822 in Bonnerville New Jersey he had a long public career including Newark mayor chancellor of New Jersey and brigadier general in the New Jersey National Guard. He served as minister to Germany and was later ambassador.
Elk Rapids Michigan reports a local fad of dyeing a gray horse cardinal red. A woman tried ink first then dye after the ink did not take. The horse attracts street attention during the day.
A brick public school building No 4, erected in 1888 and valued at $22 000, was destroyed by fire tonight in Olean New York. The blaze started from a furnace in the basement.

Philadelphia reports a raid on Boericke and Tafel at 1011 Arch Street where burglars opened a fireproof safe and took 200 in currency and 8000 in registered bonds. Detectives suspect New York operatives working with a local coordinator. this marks the fourth such safe robbery in eight years.
The Bass Rock house, a premier summer hotel on the New England coast, was gutted by a morning fire in East Gloucester. Believed incendiary, the blaze left the hotel and its furniture a total loss with estimates of 50 000 dollars and 20 000 dollars insured.
