Captain Heistand of the regular army has engaged to act as private secretary to McKinley for four years.
The Democratic national committee chose Chicago to host the July 7 convention on the twenty ninth ballot after a tight contest with St. Louis and Cincinnati. Chicago led from ballot fourteen, aided by better hotel resources, while St. Louis drew strong silver faction support. New York and Cincinnati dwindled as Chicago gained a bare majority and the convention crowd began to disperse by Friday night.
New York police recovered a large green goods operation at public auction. The haul includes 200000 circulars 50000 addressed envelopes 84000 potential victims 70 state and 70 Bradstreet directories and 15 books detailing the scheme. Philadelphia January 16 The arbitration commission for the Traction Company grievances met but did little as General Manager Heetom attended, not being a member, and the employer's side objected. After two hours the manager withdrew and the grievances were formally presented before adjourning until tomorrow.
