President Cleveland and Mrs. Cleveland hosted a formal reception in the mansion’s blue, red, green, and east rooms for the diplomatic corps led by Sir Julian Pauncefote. Chinese minister and wife attracted special attention amid a procession of ambassadors, judges, military officers, and public officials. Public reception followed from 12:40 to 2:00 p.m., with hundreds lining Pennsylvania Avenue.
A county bank facility was robbed this morning by masked highwaymen. They stole Wells Fargo’s treasure box containing registered mail packages. The total value of the loot remains undetermined.

Captain H F Rich and eight crewmen of the Julia A Ward arrived in Galveston after their schooner was driven onto shoals near Chenier a Tigue on December 20. They survived five days without water or food, built a raft, fled west, landed near St Joseph harbor, searched for water, and were aided at Arthur Franklin's plantation before reaching shore exhausted. The vessel was bound from Jay View Massachusetts to Sabine Pass with a rock cargo.
