President Abdi Rashed Ali Sharmarke of Somalia was beaten during a trip to drought stricken areas near Los Anod. A man in a police uniform was arrested in connection with the shooting as army units imposed a dusk to dawn curfew across the nation. The president and former prime minister had a history of East West diplomacy including Moscow Peking London and Washington. The drought worsened tribal tensions in the north where the attack occurred.

Obituary for Clara L Jones 82 Phoenix native dies at Doctor's Hospital
Clara Lucille Jones aged 82 died Monday in Doctor's Hospital. Funeral services at 2 p.m. Friday at Messinger Mortuary, burial in Camelback Cemetery. She came to Phoenix in 1920 from Caddo Texas, and farmed where Coronado High School now stands. Survivors include son Delmar and daughter Velma McFarlin of Scottsdale, two brothers, three sisters, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Eight Diehard Protesters Face Chicago Trial for 1968 Riot
Eight men charged with crossing state lines to incite a riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention appeared for trial in Chicago. They attempted to place Viet Cong and American flags on their defense table to mark a Vietnam Moratorium. A courtroom marshal removed both flags after a tug of war with Abbott Hoff man. Judge Julius Hoffman refused the request to permit flags on the table. Before proceedings began, David Dellinger urged a solemn courtroom observance for wounded and wasted lives in the war. All eight defendants and lawyers wore black armbands. The judge previously denied a recess to let the defendants join the day’s protest.
