Scottsdale Rural Fire Department extinguished two rubbish fires Wednesday. Crews responded to 8210 KE. Thomas at 5 14 p m and doused the blaze that spread to a tree. Cause undetermined. A separate bonfire at 11641 N 68th St was put out at 7 29 a m with children cited as starters.
United Press International reports the Vietnam moratorium drawing hundreds of thousands nationwide and a 50,000 strong candlelight march past the White House. Widow Coretta Scott King urged Nixon to bring the troops home as counter demonstrations surfaced. Police logged Boston’s Common crowd as the era’s largest.
Prosecution witness testified a leader of demonstrators warned against marches that might trigger riots during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Eight defendants face conspiracy charges. The session featured a flag tug of war on the defense table and interruptions over protest moratoriums.
United Press International reports two storm systems affect the Midwest and Far West with rain and snow. Northwestern Illinois to Wisconsin see mixed precipitation, Rochester Minnesota records two inches of snow. A Pacific cold front brings rain from Washington to California and Nevada, with Sierra Nevada warnings and closures on Sonora Tioga passes. Ebbetts and Carson passes require chains as snow levels rise then drop to about 2,000 feet in 24 hours.
Officials attend a mortgage burning at Community Park to celebrate paying off the $275000 mortgage on the 26 acre site. Sen. Paul Fannin was invited but will not attend. Charles McDowell will attend in his stead. The event includes a flag ceremony by Boy Scouts, a Boys Choir performance, and a square dancing demo. The park houses a baseball diamond used by the Chicago Cubs for spring training, a swint stadium and an old adobe building once the city’s first schoolhouse.
Thieves stole 655 dollars of amphetamine from Fifth Avenue Medical Center between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 6 15 this morning by prying a storeroom door. A 400 dollar television at Ken Cammisa’s home on East Willetta was taken between 4 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. A noisy burglary at Peter Anselmo’s residence on North 81st woke the occupants. no items reported stolen there.
Grace Doutrick 57, former The Progress advertising employee, dies Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital. Born in Chicago, she moved from New York City to Arizona in 1954 and led Phoenix Ad Club in 1963 64 and was named top advertising woman in the west. Survivors include husband Louis K. and son Robert A. Webb. Services Friday at 10 am at Messinger Mortuary with burial at Green Acres Cemetery.
New York reports a Parke-Bernet sale shatters records with a Degas piece selling for 550000 and a Cassatt Mother and Child fetching 140000, marking a world auction high for an American artist. The three dozen works from the Magnin collection and other totals push the event to 1952000 in top prices. Dr Armand Hammer of Los Angeles intends to donate his Cassatt to the Los Angeles County Museum.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose to 838.77, up 8.71, with 30 industrials, 20 railroad, 15 utilities, and 65 stocks advancing. Volume reached 19.5 million shares versus 15.74 million on Wednesday.
