Giant XB-70 passes 2000 mph and reaches 70000 feet
At Edwards Air Force Base the XB-70 commanded speeds beyond 2000 mph, three times the sound barrier, during a 1 hour 43 minute flight. The craft climbed to a top altitude of 70000 feet as a polar satellite launch followed. Nearby Saigon forces seized Man Yang pass opening the highway to Pleiku. The December draft quota was set at 45224, the highest since Korea, with 10 more than the previous rate. A satellite carrying equipment for 20 experiments was launched into polar orbit as part of a geophysical laboratory series.
