The Senate judiciary committee asked federal judge nominee Francis Morrissey to return for more questioning on conflicting testimony about his diploma from a now closed Georgia law school. The hearing focuses on questions of legitimacy and qualifications.
The United States and the Soviet Union will jointly publish information on effects of space flight on humans and other living beings. The Soviet Union will soon be ready to exchange weather satellite data with the United States under a 1963 agreement. Secretary Rusk said Communist demands for full US troop withdrawals from South Vietnam are no longer a condition for peace talks, though Hanoi shows little willingness to negotiate now.
U.S. Court of Appeals reversed dismissal of Theresa Robichaud’s $200,000 civil rights suit against Maricopa County officials led by prosecutor Charles N. Ronan. The ruling rejects immunity when prosecutors act as policemen and allows the case to proceed.
Funeral services with military honors are set for Curtis Ray Tarkington a Scottsdale boy killed in Vietnam. Rosary Friday at Mortuary and mass Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help will precede burial in St. Francis Cemetery with the 1408th Association of the 82nd Airborne Division and a color guard in attendance. Tarkington, 19, died October 6 from artillery fire while en route to a landing zone. He was a 1964 Scottsdale High School graduate and hoped to coach after Army service. Survivors include his parents James and Doris Tarkington siblings Eugene 14 Sherry 17 and grandparents Horace Cheney and family.
A tentative start date of October 25 is set for the Scottsdale Stage bus line. Operator Al Veach says two buses are in hand and schedules and advertising are being arranged, with a promise to roll on the 25th unless an unforeseen bind occurs.
A three judge federal panel will hear the suit to force redistricting in Arizona on November 18. Federal Judge James Walsh of Tucson set the date today.
Arturo Gordillo a Cuban exile with his family sailed 21 feet to Florida with 25 refugees under difficult seas and rain. Coast Guard cutters guide refugee boats through the Florida Straits as Havana briefly shuts the doorway to exit. At Camarioca Cuba hundreds await transport while officials describe a makeshift staging zone near the western coast.
The Scottsdale Sertoma receives city approval to rent 50 star flags for 10 per year on 13 patriotic holidays. Flags will be installed by Sertoma with brackets and posts provided. Boy Scouts and Boys Club members raise them. Proceeds aid Sunshine Acres Boys' Club and local youth programs.
A week of fighting left 49 American soldiers dead in action in Vietnam, the toll reported by U.S. officials. Another 113 were wounded and four more were listed as missing or captured as the week’s battles continued.
Senator Robert F. Kennedy proposed inviting Red China to participate in the Geneva disarmament talks as part of a grand scale effort to halt nuclear spread. He suggested China and France join, urging broader participation for credible agreements and peace efforts.
Rep Richard H Ichord of Missouri proposed a constitutional amendment to base Senate apportionment on population. New York would gain nine seats while Arizona Utah Montana Idaho and Wyoming would share two each. He said the proposal was to spotlight objections to one man one vote but noted the Constitution requires equal Senate votes without state consent.
Tulsa County grand jurors reportedly participated in a World Series pool. Officials said the pool constituted a lottery, illegal in Oklahoma, though no action is anticipated due to a similar pool existing in the county attorney’s office.
U S infantry from the 1st Cavalry Division closed on the rear guard of about 2000 Viet Cong in the Soui La Tinh Valley, inflicting heavy casualties. In initial hours 34 Viet Cong dead and 93 captured, with at least 44 believed slain. U S losses listed as light, one air cavalry company suffering moderate casualties. Maj. Gen. Harry Kinnard led the operation from Ft. Benning to the field, while Viet Cong attacked further south before U S air strikes and artillery repelled them. A Medivac helicopter was shot down killing the pilot. co-pilot and crew survived.
Scottsdale police charged Phoenix resident Robert G. Hawley with leaving the scene of an accident. Hawley waived arraignment and hearing and awaits trial on the misdemeanor after witnesses tied his car to two crashes. A 300 dollar bond was posted.
President Joseph Kasavubu ousted Premier Moise Tshombe and his cabinet at the opening of parliament after weeks of tension over a transitional government. He named opposition leader Kimba as formateur to form a government of national union with support from the Congolese Democratic Front.
