Mansfield presses for cease fire in Vietnam action

Senator Mansfield urged President Nixon to declare an immediate unilateral cease fire in Vietnam and to accelerate troop withdrawals. He proposed concentrating on defense of key areas, pressuring Hanoi to accept a coalition government and elections within weeks or months, independent of Saigon.

Children play dangerous game in Scottsdale street traffic

Scottsdale police report three children 12 and 13 year old boys and a 13 year old girl risked serious harm by running in front of cars in the 1890 block of N Granite Reef Rd. The youths played bullfighter with oncoming traffic as neighbors tried to stop them and police were summoned. They were released to their parents.

BYU President Denies Racism Charges Amid ASU Boycott

ASU Black Liberation group plans to boycott the ASU BYU football game in Tempe over alleged BYU racism. BYU President Ernest Wilkinson categorically denies the charges, citing BYU policy and diverse student enrollment including Indian students and dozens of foreign nations. John Marsh of ASU expects most black and some white students to protest, while California officials note previous conference positions on such disruptions.

Market Dow Jones ends mixed with gains in industrials

The Dow Jones final shows 30 industrials at 811.84 up 4.95 while 20 railroads stand at 195.64 unchanged and 15 utilities at 110.49 up 0.25. The total 65 stocks rise to 273.80 up 0.98 as sales reach 11.4 million shares versus 9.09 million on Wednesday.

Stolen cash from coin machines at Blue Goat Pub

Police said $400 was taken from several coin operated machines at the Blue Goat Pub 602 N Miller Rd between 1 a m and 8 50 p m Wednesday. Thieves forced a kitchen door to gain entry and used a chisel to pry open the coin boxes on the machines.

Brandt and Free Democrats Reach Pact to Unseat Kiesinger

Bonn reports a Brandt led Social Democrat Free Democrat agreement that could install Brandt as chancellor. Negotiators, meeting in Bonn, pressed toward a coalition with 30 Free Democrat seats giving balance of power as CDU and SPD seek a ruling majority. Details remain secret though party leaders back closer US ties and a nuclear weapons ban treaty.
