Scientists at Houston SPACE CENTER report Apollo 12 rocks lack breccias that dominated Apollo 11 samples and show lighter soil and glass coatings. Differences in mineral content and titanium levels suggest varying lunar surface histories while both sets point to ancient volcanic activity.
Apollo 12 crew Richard Gordon Pete Conrad and Alan Bean returned to Ellington Air Force Base near Houston amid a 500 strong crowd in 38 degree weather. The astronauts traveled in a quarantine van then to Lunar Receiving Laboratory for final safety checks. They praised the flight and noted an additional 13 pounds of lunar rocks and parts from the surveyor. Geologists hailed Apollo 12 samples as a prize showing differences from Apollo 11 specimens.

Robert M. Schmitt of the Tonto National Forest leads nature walks in the Superstition wilderness on Sundays Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Hikes start at 10 am and 2 pm Sundays and Wednesdays at Peralta Road boundary. Tuesdays are six hour hikes requiring good walking shoes a sack lunch and water starting at 10 am.
A burglary at Mayor Bud Tims' office on 813 N. Hinton involved a skylight entry and a 20 by 20 inch opening with no losses reported. Officer Tom arrested James Wesley Williams, 18, of Phoenix after he was spotted fleeing near 64th Street and Camelback Road with a screwdriver handle showing. Williams admitted to the attempted burglary and another Phoenix burglary. separate crime at 7408 E Beatrice saw a window opened and a coin collection valued at nearly $27 stolen.
The FCC voted 5 to 0 to renew for three years the licenses of WTOP AM FM and TV in Washington D C. The Post Newsweek group owns the stations along with Newsweek magazine and the Washington Post. Plaintiffs Allen Phelps and Edward Kilpatrick charged news distortion and media concentration.

UPI reports Green Berets and South Vietnamese troops repelled an explosive assault on Bu Prang Special Forces camp 112 miles northeast of Saigon. In the delta battle, 56 Viet Cong were killed while U.S. forces suffered no injuries and light South Vietnamese casualties were reported. Cashes show U.S. war toll over 300,000 with 310 more casualties this week, as the conflict widens in the My Tho area and surrounding mangrove swamps.
The postmaster urged residents to mail gifts and cards early for Christmas delivery. Distances determine deadlines: distant destinations by December 13 and near by December 13. cards by December 10 for distant addresses and December 15 for local or neighboring states. Include sender and recipient names and addresses inside parcels and use ZIP codes on all outgoing mail.
Salt River Project said Apache Lake dry-up will be delayed from 1970 to 1971 to allow installation of a pumped storage system at Horse Mesa Dam. Generators will be converted from 25 Hz to 60 Hz. Canyon Lake was emptied last summer for similar work and refilling will start in about three weeks, finishing in early spring.
Phoenix UPI Senator Paul Fannin Republican of Arizona said he will offer an amendment to the tax reform bill to curb the power of organized labor and safeguard the rights of union members.
Fannin spoke at the Camelback Inn luncheon of Arizona Building Contractors proposing an amendment to end unions tax exempt status and their ability to spend large sums on politics. He called labor unions a major loophole in tax laws threatening workers freedom of choice.
A Vietnamese military court convicted four of the 43 defendants in the Trong spy trial of high treason and sentenced them to life in prison. Twenty-two other defendants were found guilty of lesser treason or destabilizing national security with sentences from one month to 20 years. two Saigon journalists were freed. Huynh Van Trong and Vu Ngoc Nha were among the high treason cases.
