Delegates from about 90 tribes attend the 22nd annual National Congress of American Indians convention at the Executive House in Scottsdale. About 100 have registered by mid-morning with 500 to 600 expected. events include a 1:30 p.m. welcome, speaker lineup, a parade led by Barry Goldwater, and an open barbecue with fry bread.

Staying trial starts jury selection in murder case
Jury selection began today in Superior Court for Edward L. Michael Jr. charged with fatally shooting his wife Florence in their Scottsdale home. The 40 year old lawyer was arrested after his father notified police and the couple’s left cheek wound stemmed from a 22 caliber bullet.

Viet Cong Attacks Da Nang Air Base Again

Fire buffs charged with murder in fatal blaze
In Troy New York police charged brothers John Kilduff 24 and George Kilduff 22 known as fire buffs with first degree murder and arson for a 1961 fire that killed nine children. They allegedly watched for three hours at Napoleon Sousies home before aiding removal of bodies including Sousies grandchild and eight of his children aged two to eighteen.

East Scottsdale Patrol to Continue Under No-Citation Order
Scottsdale police will patrol the east side annex but may not issue traffic citations. Local officers may only arrest for misdemeanors or breaches of the peace witnessed, while the sheriff can issue traffic violations. City officials say vital services will remain during de annexation though police coverage will be reduced. Residents worry about loss of fire protection and refuse collection until contracts or re annexation occur. Four sewer projects may be abandoned for years.
