Two poems written by a prisoner awaiting sentence in New York City move the judge. One is addressed to the judge, the other to his girlfriend. Both express remorse and ask for another chance, leading to a lighter sentence than would have been imposed.
James H Boyd receives gratitude from Barry Goldwater regarding editorial attention to his Tucson speech. Goldwater thanks the paper for informing readers and expresses appreciation for the coverage. The letter is dated May 21 1957 and references the May 10 issue.
Optimists organize three new scouting units in Roosevelt Coudell area this week. Scout leadership includes Sam S. Lewis heading Troop 330 with members Stephen Danka Dil Dis, and Dar- win Starks among others. Scottsdale Club’s Ward leaders supervise Wednesday meetings. Scout Jerr Ride and R. O. Bullack assist, with Russell Glasser as another official.
County Parks Office announces expanded summer activities at desert mission pool and park areas. New sites include Sunnyslope and Scottsdale Roads in Scoffsdale and Tonto School in Scottsdale. Programs cover youth leagues, crafts, movies, and free swim lessons with hours daily through September.
Public Service launches Kitchen Fun Classes for ages 9 to 16 starting June 6 at Lavally High School home economics. First year groups meet 1 30 to 11 30 am Thursdays, second year 1 30 to 3 30 pm. Separate contests and prizes for each age group, registration via WH 5 6331.
The Lions Club plans a door to door sale of light bulbs next week with a $9.00 package including three 60 watt bulbs two 100 watt bulbs one 136 watt bulb and three 60 watt bulbs. Members will wear purple and gold shirts and canvass residential areas to raise funds for sight conservation and other charitable activities. Rear Admiral George Dufek is noted as the first American to set foot on the South Pole and the first to stand at the bottom of the world since Captain Robert F. Scott 44 years earlier.
The Navy Seabees relocated 150000 adele penguins to aid construction of an Antarctic base as part of Operation Deep Freeze.
