U.N. Forces to Withdraw From Congo Ending Era of Peacekeeping
U.N. troops will depart the Congo on June 30 leaving a nation seeking self rule four years after independence. Katanga secession is ended, Tshombe in exile, and Congo builds a budget, currency devaluation benefits, and homegrown professionals with aid from the United States and U.N. agencies. A reduced force will leave behind unresolved bush revolts in Kivu and Kwilu and a communist backed liberation council across the river in Brazzaville.
