Dr Walter C Alvarez explains cortisone steroids act mainly to reduce inflammation and suppress immune responses in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and autoimmune diseases. They may relieve symptoms in some eye and lung diseases but rarely cure underlying causes and can flare skin darkening and infection risks if misused.
The Senate moves toward a potential cloture vote as leaders study a package of amendments endorsed by both parties. A closed session was held to limit discussion while leaders shape the final bill. Senator Clark voiced opposition to parts of the amendments but said he would support the measure to advance the bill.
A birth is recorded for Mrs. Clark Savoy of Palo Verde Avenue yielding a girl. The event is noted at St. Josephs Street with the infant named Itay.
A state of emergency was declared in Peru after a stadium crush and riot following a Peru versus Argentina soccer match. Police fired tear gas and shots, with hundreds injured and at least 268 killed, many women and children, as crowds surged toward exits and doors barred their escape.
Two 5 year old Scottsdale boys were arrested for burglaries at Master Cleaners on East Belleview and the Union 76 station at Scottsdale Road and Belleview Street. Police said the boys admitted taking 98 dollars from the cleaners. nothing reported missing at the gas station. They were taken to the County Detention Home.
Funeral services for Stanley E. Rathbun 61 of 3414 North 62nd Place will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Messinger Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Herbert P Landes and the Scottsdale BPOE Lodge No 2148 officiating. Interment follows at Green Acres Memorial Gardens. He aDd lived in Scottsdale eight and a half years coming from Dowagiac Michigan where he taught at AiResearch and belonged to BPOE Lodge 889. He helped found the Scottsdale Elks Lodge 2148. Survivors include wife Marjorie three stepsons sister and five grandchildren.
Republican leaders meeting in Washington weigh 1964 options with Nixon and Scranton as potential presidential nominees if Goldwater falters in California or blocked at the San Francisco convention. Morton appears as a possible running mate for either. Hatfield could be temporary chair with Miller leading convention plans.
Two Scottsdale Jaycees won state posts at the Flagstaff convention. Erv Hanson was elected president and John Thomas treasurer as about 300 Jaycees gathered at the Americana Hotel for a three day meeting. Hanson secured election on the second ballot. Other officers include Vince Normile Don Wilson Everett Cleghorn and Bill Sitton. Scottsdale also won division honors for ways and means public relations and youth and sports projects for 1963 64.
Scottsdale Civitan Club hosts a convention May 27 to 31 at Mountain Shadows gathering 19 southwestern clubs. Mayor Woudenberg to present key to the city to Richard H Rohmer, International Civitan VP from Toronto, Thursday morning at the resort. Over 250 members and families expected.
NBC will televise the 16th annual Emmy awards from Hollywood and New York amid a dispute as ABC and CBS withdraw support over category choices and competition. NBC leads nominations with 56, CBS 45, and ABC 25. Hosts include Joey Bishop at the Hollywood Palladium and E G Marshall at the Texas Pavilion in New York.
Arizona clergymen led by Rev. Aubrey Moore press a campaign to ban Darwin’s theory from public schools. A coalition of 45 local religious leaders including a rabbi reject the ban and defend teaching evolution as compatible with faith. Moore challenges Rab. Plotkin to a public TV debate as lawmakers consider equal time for creationism. The debate echoes the 1925 Scopes case and highlights tensions between science and religion in Arizona.
Luci Baines Johnson, 16, daughter of President Johnson, will lead the Harvard Illinois milk day parade on June 6. She will be guest of honor and crown the 1964 milk day queen for the town’s annual celebration on Main Street known as the milk center of the world.
