Fort McDowell the Hazardous Post that Helped Build Phoenix
Phoenix historian Fret Hagenstad details Fort McDowell’s harsh post conditions after the Civil War. California Volunteers built it to fight Apaches, followed by Arizona Volunteers led by white officers with local Pimas and Maricopas. The fort saw scorpions snakes poor food and heavy toil before abandonment in 100. The site now survives barely, possibly doomed by a dam project, and indirectly helped spark the Salt River Valley farming community that became Phoenix.
