J. J. Connors, district personnel manager, announced nearly 100 new teachers are needed for the Scottsdale School District in the 1967-68 year. Expansion requires 70 hires, 28 replacements, with 1,041 contracts signed of 1,069 employed, totaling 1,139 teachers next year. About 200 substitutes remain on file.
Murry Harris of the Association of Scottsdale Architects supports commercial zoning for N Scottsdale Rd at Lincoln and Scottsdale Rds with limits. He urges four corner coverage, 12 foot landscaped setbacks, bonds, and height caps, while opponents plan petitions to block Fennell’s 7 percent acre proposal.
The U S House Armed Services Committee backed extending undergraduate deferments and enabling occupational deferments for apprentices. It also moves to set national criteria for local boards and restricts a presidential draft lottery while signaling final action on a four year extension of the draft law.
Scottsdale population climbs 504.2 percent since 1950 to 6 580 residents, per First National Bank of Arizona. Building permits rise 226.4 percent from 1960 to 1966, with $18,965,448 issued in 1966. Net assessed valuation grows from $73,974,516 in 1960 to $124,654,568 in 1966. School enrollment up with 17,092 elementary and 6,646 high school students in 1966.
Sixteen antiwar senators led by Robert Kennedy urge North Vietnam to resume negotiations and not rely on U S withdrawal. Thant calls Israel border tensions grave and seeks clarifications from Cairo on troop concentrations. Moscow warns of action to control the seas after collisions with American ships near its coast.
A Defense Department report shows savings of more than 21 million dollars by purchasing drugs from foreign manufacturers. The department rejected what it deemed unreasonable U.S. prices and bought at least seven drugs abroad, noting the low estimates still imply substantial savings.
One more prospective juror chosen for Charles Schmid's murder trial in Pima County Superior Court while 10 were dismissed leaving eight of 120 called for interviewing. Speculation grows that Judge Richard Boylston may recall another panel of 120 once the first group is exhausted. Forty-one jurors are needed with 29 accepted so far by both sides.
A warrant was issued for Willis Carroll Kelly of Scottsdale on a charge of illegal marijuana sale. Police say Kelly attempted to sell 50000 dollars worth of marijuana to state narcotics agents in the Fashion Square area last February. The earlier possession charge was dropped by Justice Harald Holcomb for lack of proof.
At Texas Southern University riot police burst into Lanier and Bruce Halls after hours of dormitory gunfire. A rookie officer Louis Kuba died from a head wound, while officers Blaylock and Dugger were wounded and students were arrested. Police recovered four guns and two Molotov cocktails as the campus resembled a battleground and 472 students were jailed.
Mothers worried about danger to children near an unoccupied house at 7318 E La Reata saw action after Jack Corson of Carson Pool Service offered to pump the pool for free to Gibraltar Savings and Loan Co. Mortgage holder. Paddock Pools offered a pool cover until the house is sold. Mrs. R L Melzer praised The Progress for the coverage of the issue.
Scottsdale service station operator Owen Garrett appeared at the city council meeting for a hearing on an amendment to the service station criteria ordinance. The council postponed the hearing until Councilwoman Doris McCaulley and her committee can study and propose changes. Garrett welcomed possible changes.
UPI reports 3,600 North Vietnamese troops ring Con Thien as Marine tanks and infantry attack to break through. U.S. jets strike SAM sites while Hochmuth vows to push back, but heavy fighting leaves Marines with 18 dead and 102 wounded. 250 Communists killed per body count.
