Senate SST showdown as vote looms on revival funds

Washington (UPI) opponents and backers of the Supersonic Transport plan prepare for a Wednesday Senate floor vote on reviving the SST project. The House already approved 85.3 million to continue development, while Sen. Proxmire seeks to strike the funding from the appropriation bill.

Scottsdale Jaycees Citizenship Awards Honor Local Students

Eight Scottsdale area students won Junior Citizenship Awards with eight more named runners up. Coronado High senior Christina Spann won a $500 scholarship, Ted Decker of Scottsdale High earned a $50 savings bond, and elementary winner Bruce Francis of Tonto School received a savings bond.

Hopi Indians Sue Over Black Mesa Coal Mining Plan

A Hopi faction has filed federal suits to halt coal mining on Black Mesa Arizona. California attorney Robert Pescyger for the Native American Rights Fund represents 62 plaintiffs naming Interior Secretary Rogers Morton and Peabody Coal Co as defendants. The suit challenges a 1966 contract between the Interior Department and Peabody claiming Hopi religious chiefs did not certify the agreement and the Hopi Tribal Council lacked authority.

Scottsdale Teens Win Arizona Majorette Titles 1971

Jana McDonald 15 and Vicki Lee Allen 10 earned Senior and Miss Majorette of Arizona titles in NBTA events held at Chandler High School and ASU. Cherylee Gray 12 won Junior Miss Majorette, with all three advancing to the national NBTA contest August 4 to 8 at Notre Dame University. they study under Michelle McKeown of Scottsdale.

Nixon fights Europe pull-out

President Nixon backed by 24 former officials from both parties said any unilateral NATO force reductions in Europe would be an historic error. The White House described the move as bipartisan support aimed at defeating the Mansfield amendment to cut U.S. troops from 300,000 to 150,000.

Grounding and resumption plans amid nuclear test leak

The UPI report details underground nuclear test suspensions after a 20 kiloton detonation caused a radiation leak across 18 states and Canada. AEC's Robert Miller says resumption in June follows White House approval and tighter procedures costing about 5 million dollars to improve test-site analyses and safety. the June test named Miniata aims at gas recovery via underground explosions. Two Drivers Cited in Scottsdale Road Crash

Police cite two drivers after a Friday 4:50 p.m. collision at Scottsdale Road and Windsor. Dorothy Funke, 66, was cited for speed not reasonable and prudent. Mildred Evans, 56, lacked a valid license. Both sustained injuries not requiring hospitalization. Additional minor injuries reported in a separate Scottsdale incident.

Scottsdale Hosts Inaugural Arizona Parks and Recreation Meeting

More than 25 park commissioners and board members from across Arizona gathered in Scottsdale for the first statewide meeting of the newly formed Parks and Commissions Branch of the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association. Attendees included officials from Yuma Phoenix Tempe and county boards. Fred Nobbe of Maricopa County Parks acts as president and Scottsdale Vice Mayor Ken Murray as secretary treasurer.
