Postal rates rise after court allows increase

UPI reports a three judge U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel upheld earlier rulings permitting a postal rate hike. First class rates rise six to eight cents and air mail 10 to 11 cents. Second and third class rates jump 20 to 33 percent while fourth class remains largely unchanged. The move is slated to boost annual revenue by about 1.45 billion dollars and takes effect at midnight Sunday. The government argues rates may be raised temporarily within 100 days if the Postal Commission has not acted. The ANPA and MPA challenged the rise, claiming subsidies would continue, but the court found no basis to block the temporary increase. About 5 billion new stamps were printed and distributed during the proceedings.
