A night fire at 825 N. Hayden Road gutted five units of an unfinished apartment building. The Rural Fire Department estimated losses between 10000 and 15000 dollars, with Chief Lou Witzeman confirming the figure.
Scottsdale retains Phoenix attorney Mark Wilmer to join Richard Kamps and City Attorney Osmund Burton Jr. in contesting the Eastside annexation. A Yuma judge ruled the area was validly annexed in 1961, with a new trial motion possible. Scottsdale aims to delay de annexation while Price Waterhouse provides an exhibit validating valuation. Meanwhile a large fire at the East cooperative unit caused minor injuries and extensive damage, with firefighting efforts spanning multiple agencies.
Bermuda snarl forces Gordon Cooper to postpone a 34 hour world flight atop the Atlas rocket. A Bermuda tracking radar and a diesel service-tower engine failure caused the delay after 4 hours 19 minutes in Faith 7. A 6 am PDT Wednesday second attempt planned with Cooper optimistic.
Sidney Fisher of Yuma testified before the House subcommittee that he sent in false rolling reports on a federal aid highway project from Yuma to Gila Bend. He denied intent to defraud, said junior workers misinterpreted orders, and blamed supervisor Wayne Butler and district engineer Owen Layton for covering up errors.
About 150 Negro students clashed with white hecklers and police during an anti segregation march in downtown Nashville. At least three men were arrested, injuries minor, and further demonstrations were planned amid mayor Briley's report of progress after talks with white businessmen and Negro leaders. Governor Clement warned he would uphold law without federal intervention.
The Scottsdale School District board of education meets at the administration center to discuss a light agenda including student insurance, tax sheltered annuity for district employees, terminations and employment, LexLDOOKs for theatre arts and science, campus police questioning policy, a donated clock from Arcadia High School, the 1963-64 audio visual bid, and a district reading program presentation.
The Arizona Homeowners Association protests a Valley Community Hospital plan to form a tax district for a 150 bed hospital near Hayden and McDowell or Papago Park. The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will consider the petition at the next meeting after hearings and a letter from AHA president David Cox.
In Birmingham Alabama two white youths were cut with knives and a Negro were wounded by a pellet gun Monday night amid sporadic street violence. Police state troopers patroled while federal troops observed. Martin Luther King Jr urged nonviolence and calm.
Considerable high cloudiness across today tonight and tomorrow. Temperatures rise to around 96 with a low near 62 tomorrow morning. Yesterday reached 94 and current low earlier today.
In Taylor Lake Village Texas the Cooper family learned of L Gordon Cooper's 22 orbited flight scrub. His wife Trudy and daughters Camala Al and Janita arrived at Webster Junior High School silent yet composed. NASA said Cooper phoned 30 minutes before the 6 am PDT launch.
