Heffalump Makes Regular Dips at Maytag Zoo Lagoon
Heffalump the 24 year old Indian elephant at Maytag Zoo is led to the zoo lagoon several times weekly for swims. Elka the four year old African elephant also visits the lagoon but they do not swim together. Heffy, weighing about 800 pounds, enjoys the water but avoids the ducks. She arrived in the United States two years ago as the youngest Indian elephant to be imported before the zoo opened. The swims help beat Arizona heat and she is bathed with soap and oil rubbed into her skin.
