Pilot Survives 15,000-Foot Plunge After Jet Parachute Fails
Marine 1st Lt. Cliff J. Judkins III, 26, of Atlanta, fell 15,000 feet into the Pacific when his F8 Crusaders parachute failed to deploy. He landed feet first, suffered a compressed back fracture, a hairline pelvis fracture, and two broken ankles after a 22 hour water ordeal. He was rescued by a Navy ship and moved to a hospital ship where his condition improved from critical.
