Kennedy presses year end test ban in Bonn talks

President Kennedy urged immediate progress on a nuclear test ban during talks with West German Chancellor Adenauer in Bonn. He warned Moscow that time is short, called for allied unity, and promoted a Western peace corps plan as crowds cheered during his four day European tour.

Injured Scottsdale Officer Starts New Career as Agent

Jon Nicholson, 26, a Scottsdale policeman injured in a September motorcycle crash, begins work this week as a life insurance agent after being unable to return to the force. He has six piano students and plans to enroll at Arizona State University this fall.

Senate Extends Taxes to June 1964

The Senate approved a House passed bill extending federal corporation and consumer excise taxes for one year to prevent a $4.2 billion annual revenue loss. The extension covers corporate taxes, liquor beer new car and auto part duties, and cigarette taxes until June 30 1964, plus 10 percent telephone and 5 percent airline ticket levies.

Wreck Kills 3 Hurts 2 Near Gibson City Ill

A Scottsdale man Alva Ray Hawkins 43 and his 12 year old son Mark were injured after a one car crash near Gibson City that killed Lyne Kirby 17 Margaret Kirby 46 of Phoenix and Roy G. Clark 19 of Fort Hood Texas. Clark apparently fell asleep at the wheel crossed the center line and the car hit a guard rail. Mark sustained two broken legs a broken jaw and facial lacerations Hawkins suffered a broken jaw arm and leg injuries and lacerations Mrs Hawkins flew in from Scottsdale to be with her husband.

Democrats Name Atlantic City As Likely 1964 Convention Site

Democratic site committee selected Atlantic City as the probable venue for the 1964 convention while Chicago and San Francisco remained options. The GOP chose the Cow Palace in San Francisco for its July 13, 1964 convention.

Young GOP Men Attend SF Meet

Forty three Arizona Young Republicans left for San Francisco to attend the National Young Republican Convention. Seven voting delegates and seven alternates travel as spectators and boosters of Sen. Pope Paul VI in Vatican audience with about 50 diplomats from other nations pledges that the Holy See will not intervene in temporal powers. He says the Holy See seeks world peace on truth justice love and liberty and notes U S absence from relations. He thanks attendees and meets each diplomat individually.

Third Child Dies in 18 Months in Wisconsin

Plattsville report states Marilyn Butson twenty died from head injuries after a horse she rode bolted and hit a car this weekend. Her sister Diane eight died in June from a fall from a hayloft and brother Melvin died in a December 1961 traffic crash.

Bathyscaph dives to hunt Thresher off Cape Cod

Trieste, towed by the salvage ship Preserver, descended to 8400 feet at 10 35 a m EDT in a last attempt to locate the missing nuclear submarine Thresher. Crew included Navy Lt Cmdr Donald L Keach and Kenneth V MacKenzie both San Diego residents. The dive aimed to last six hours with an expected four hour search and one hour ascent. The operation began 220 miles off Cape Cod where Thresher disappeared on April 10 with 129 aboard.

Heat warning predicts record highs for Valley in late June

State Lodges Charge Beckwith in Evers Slaying

Byron De La Beckwith, a 42 year old Mississippi gun fancier, faces a state murder charge for the slaying of NAACP field secretary Medgar Evers on June 12. He also faces federal civil rights charges. a hearing before U.S. Commissioner John R. Countiss is planned to pursue conspiracy grounds. Fingerprint evidence tied Beckwith to the rifle used in the murder. Evers brother Charles Evers urged vigorous prosecution as federal authorities noted additional evidence beyond the fingerprint.
