Six San Diego tuna clippers seized by Ecuadorian navy

Ecuadorian warships strafed the Neptune and seized six tuna boats near Salinas, including the Royal Pacific and Puritan. The vessels were San Diego owned. no injuries reported. Edward Silva of the American Tunaboat Association cited armed guards aboard Neptune and said the incident mirrors prior cases. Senator George Murphy urged President Nixon to extend armed protection to si,xty boats in the area.

Nixon aims to withdraw over 260000 U S troops from Vietnam by end of 1970

President Nixon said at a news conference that more than 260000 U S combat troops could be withdrawn from Vietnam by year end 1970 if peace prospects improve and Communist forces reciprocate. A Defense Department note counted about 60 percent of Army and Marine ground forces in Vietnam toward that total.

Nixon warns of further action to curb inflation

President Nixon said he is prepared to pursue other courses of action if inflation remains unchecked after two to three months. He noted budget cuts, extension of the 10 percent income tax surcharge, and tighter credit, while Treasury Secretary Kennedy ruled out rolling back interest rates or wage and price increases.

Pompidou Inaugurated President of France in Elysee Ceremony

Georges Pompidou was sworn in as president of France in a rainswept half hour ceremony at the Elysee Palace. He honored Charles de Gaulle as the grand old man who did not attend and pledged to uphold the constitution and France's dignity. Gaston Palewski proclaimed Pompidou, recalling Nixon’s Paris visit and lauding De Gaulle's era as a model for seven years.

Burglars Take 55 Dollars From Saguaro Veterinary Clinic

Police report burglars broke a window at Saguaro Veterinary Clinic on E McDonald Drive between 6 15 p m Wednesday and 9 a m Thursday and stole about 55 dollars from the cash box. A separate break in at Jack Johnson Chrysler Plymouth on Scottsdale Road saw thieves force open vending machines after cutting a gate lock between 9 p m Thursday and 6 40 a m today and take between 2 and 3 dollars.

Camelback Inn Tax Valuation Questioned by County Leaders

Phoenix officials noted Camelback Inn as an example of tax inequity after county assessor staff reviewed a $3.3 million valuation for Paradise Valley resort. Supervisor Stark called for a full look at the assessment citing concerns over property and improvement values and a 1967 sale to Marriott Corp. The assessor broke down the $3,378,951 total into $809,640 land, $1,964,429 improvements, and $604,882 personal property.

Three Fence Fires Cause $450 Damage in Nearby Homes

Firemen responded to four fence fires Thursday afternoon in a neighborhood. Each blaze caused about $150 in damage, destroying roughly 50 feet of fencing. The Maiden residence fire was spotted by patrols. the others’ causes remain unknown. An additional electric shoe polisher fire at 6041 N Quail Run Rd caused about $500 damage but was contained by the owner before arrival.

Obituaries for Patricia Meyers and Nina Cowan in Scottsdale

Patricia Ann Meyers 23 of 7049 E Palm a native of Cleburne Texas died in Scottsdale after moving from Loma Linda California. Funeral services announced by Mortuary in California with burial planned in Scottsdale. Survivors include husband Leroi and daughter Karen Elizabeth, mother Marilyn Williams and sister Sharon Williams all of Loma Linda or Scottsdale. Nina Cowan 75 a North Dakota native died at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital after moving from Hollywood California. Cremation planned with arrangements by Green Acres Mortuary. Survivors include son Fred of Scottsdale and a sister out of state.

Museum seeks chief successor after Broadley resignation

The Phoenix Fine Arts Association began selecting a new director for the Phoenix Art Museum after Dr. Hugh T. Broadley resigned. Broadley, director since July 1967, will step down Sept. 1 to teach art history at Arizona State University.

Birth rate high despite new pill in Britain

The British Medical Journal reports twenty of forty three women who took the new birth control pill became pregnant. Scientists in Yugoslavia designed the pill to remove a hormone linked to side effects, but the overall birth rate remains high.
