Senate investigator testifies that Black Panther leaders praised deaths of policemen in broadcasts from Havana. Transcripts show plans for guerrilla warfare and killing police, with links to Black Student Union and SDS amid campus unrest and other militant activity.

Nixon Wins Surtax Round as House Committee Approves Extension

The House Ways and Means Committee backed a 12 month extension of the 10 percent surcharge on individual and corporate income, tied to other tax measures to curb inflation. It would repeal the $3 billion business investment credit, set revenue at about $7.6 billion, and push the bill to the full House and Senate next week.

Mrs Florimond Duke, Former McCall's Editor, Dies at 58

Ellen Florimond a former managing editor of McCall's magazine and long time publishing figure died in St Joseph's Hospital after a brain hemorrhage at age 58. She previously led McCall's Washington bureau and served on Phoenix arts and education boards. Funeral plans are pending.

Oil patch blamed in crash near Indian School Road

Police blamed a patch of oil for a three car collision on 60 W Indian School Rd. that slighted injured a Phoenix woman. Charles Schlagel of Mesa said he hit the slick while slowing, pushing Corless’s Phoenix car into Terpstra’s stopped vehicle. Schlagel cited for failure to control. In a second crash at 76th St and Thomas Rd a 16 year old girl was slightly injured when Kartehner’s car failed to yield and was struck by Hughes. Kartehner cited for failure to yield.

Radio Propaganda Hurting Red Morale Reported

A captured guerrilla document released in Saigon and issued by the Communist high command reports that Allied propaganda broadcasts are creating morale problems among Communist soldiers and affecting their confidence in victory. The document dates earlier this week and was released through U.S. military sources.

Stereo and tapes stolen from Mulholland home

Police report burglars broke a window and forced a screen at 407 W Indian School, between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday, taking a stereo and tapes valued at about 200 dollars. Richard P Mulholland is the resident.

Obituary for Ralph L. Shrum Auto salesman and veteran dies in canyon crash

Ralph L. Shrum 38 of 8671 E Thomas Rd died Sunday in an automobile crash on the Apache Trail 14 miles northeast of Apache Junction. Funeral Friday at 2 PM at Green Acres Mortuary with burial at Green Acres Cemetery. Survived by wife Betty four children Ralph 3 Brenda 2 Sherry 1 Judy Bereh 14 and sons Eddie and Bobby. He was born in Georgia and came from Oklahoma two years ago. A Marine veteran of the Korean conflict.

Commission questions SRP tree removal plan in Verde Valley

Governor's Commission on Arizona Beauty questioned Salt River Project plans to remove cottonwood willows alders and other vegetation along streams in Verde Valley. The seven questions ask how many plants are to be removed if savings in water will be substantial whether removal affects fish wildlife and recreation and whether trees could grow until removal is absolutely essential.

Youths in Scottsdale Marijuana Case Delayed Hearing

The preliminary hearing for Daniel A Pacheco 19 on marijuana for sale charges was continued indefinitely in Scottsdale Justice Court. Justice Harold Holcomb granted the continuance at the request of Pacheco's lawyer. Pacheco and Michael T Van Deever 18 were arrested Feb 13 with Jerry E Malouf as officers found 110 pounds of marijuana in a car trunk.

Oath Recitation Marks Naturalization for 76 New Citizens

In Scottsdale a naturalization ceremony saw 76 new Americans take the oath. The group included residents from Canada France Germany Greece Great Britain Tunisia and Tunisia with names such as Dr Andrew de Madar Edes and William Gisbran among others at addresses on 46th Place Navajo Trail Keim and Chaparral.

Fence plea moves to board over school district fence

City council delegates action on installing a fence in the public right of way along Cocopah School to its representatives on the city school coordinating board. The vote follows a dispute over fences at Navajo and Cocopah, with park access a goal and the district cautious about turf damage. The council also approved liquor license referral for Blue Goat tavern and accepted gifts to parks including eight olive trees and a Hollywood juniper.

Italian official seeks new death toll for Vajont disaster

Prosecutor Armando Troise said a court will review the Vajont Dam disaster casualty count. Magistrates in Belluno reportedly raised the toll from 1,995 to 2,018 after survivors requested a recheck of the casualty list yesterday.
