President Nixon sent Congress a $229.2 billion budget predicting an $11.6 billion deficit. He urged spending to stimulate full employment, proposed payroll tax hikes to fund Social Security rises, and backed revenue sharing to empower states. The plan prefers defense and research while phasing out some Great Society programs.
Detective Don Allsup, 38, directing traffic for Brooks Cadillac opening on 1200 N Scottsdale Rd was hit by a southbound car on Scottsdale Road at 9:27 p.m. He suffered minor injuries, was treated at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital, and released. The driver cited for license reexamination and failing to obey the flagman. 64 feet of skid marks were noted.

Scottsdale police investigated four traffic crashes Thursday and reported only minor injuries. No details on causes or exact locations were released.

Seven burglaries were reported in Scottsdale over the past week, including multiple breaks on Montebello and Turney avenues. Items stolen totaled under $50 in each case, with targets spanning private residences such as the Eggebeen Pollari Huey Schwartz and Probst addresses, plus Basha's Food Store on 4132 North Scottsdale and other homes on Roma and Monterosa.
The Census Bureau survey finds wives aged 18 and 19 expect to have 3.3 children on average while the overall figure 2.7 would be 18 percent above the replacement rate. The trend suggests slower national population growth.

The Labor Department said consumer prices rose 0.5 percent in December 1970, lifting the cost of living 5.5 percent above December 1969. The December 1970 rise was smaller than 1969 but still far above the 4 percent target claimed by the administration.
Scottsdale police pursued a man after he allegedly rammed a police vehicle on Granite Reef Road around 6 p.m. He reportedly fled, later returning to his Chaparral area home where officers confronted him. Lawson was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon hit and run aggravated assault reckless driving and disturbing the peace and held in city jail.
William F. Coots, 71, winter visitor to Scottsdale, died Thursday at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. He lived at 422 W Second St during Scottsdale stays and was longtime oil producer, owner of Rice Oil Co. of New York. Survived by wife Irene and two sisters. Services and burial in Wellsville at Green Acres Mortuary announced.
Agreement reached for the sale of eight Hobo Joe's outlets in the Valley to Colony Kitchens Inc of Newport Beach California. Robert W Buchheim president of Southwestern Research Corp Phoenix said negotiations include undisclosed cash and notes for certain assets. Colony Kitchens operates two Colony Kitchens and Mr restaurants in California.
