ASU Tops Enrollments in Rocky Mountain Region

Arizona State University reports the largest enrollment among Rocky Mountain area state supported higher education institutions with 26 425 students. The University of Arizona is second at 25 827 and the University of Utah third at 23 000 plus. Texas leads the west with 39 089, ahead of Washington UCLA and Berkeley.

Explosions Cause Fatal Fire and Casualties in West Conshohocken

A series of gas triggered explosions ripped through West Conshohocken rows of houses, killing firefighter Joseph Powers and leaving two missing while injuring at least 48. The blaze, aided by 40 mph gusts, burned for over three hours, damaged five homes and disrupted utilities as crews searched rubble for occupants.

Robert C Woodworth Award to Ed Prell in absentia

Ed Prell, longtime Chicago Tribune and Midwestern sports writer now Scottsdale resident, earned the Robert C Woodworth Award posthumously linked to Purdue and Big Ten intercollegiate athletics. His son Ed will accept in his absence due to a publishing assignment as the ceremony honors meritorious contributions by press and broadcast members. Udall Charge Dropped Over Fairfax Cigar Incident

Former Interior Secretary Stewart Udall faced a single charge of concealment of merchandise after a drug store arrest in Fairfax County. Two Arizona Prison Escapees Sought in Apache Junction

Prison officials report two inmates Raymond Kidwell and Jack Bills escaped from the Arizona State Prison near Apache Junction. Authorities describe both men as dangerous. Kidwell, 30, was serving four to ten years for lewd acts, Bills, 27, had a sentence of 10 years to life for second degree murder.

Soviets Plan Central Time Control System

Soviet officials announced today plans to start production of a central time control system to synchronize clocks nationwide making every timepiece in the country exact. The UPI report notes the project aims to standardize time across cities and facilities.

Dynamite blast damages tanks at Cave Creek residence

A dynamite blast at a home near Cave Creek caused more than 2500 dollars in damage to a well and holding tanks. No injuries were reported. Maricopa County deputies investigated the motive and said the homeowner Lew Brownie provided clues but did not reveal details.

Burglaries Reported Across Scottsdale Stores and Homes

Scottsdale police investigated four burglaries on Wednesday with thefts totaling about 1600 dollars. At Safeway 2801 N Scottsdale Rd burglars broke in between 12 15 and 8 a m stealing razor blades panty hose batteries cigarettes and change. Parkway Jewelers at 7111 E McDowell Rd saw a broken front window and unknown jewelry missing after alarm activation. Separate reports included a portable air conditioner taken from a shed behind a trailer on Van Buren between Jan 21 and Wednesday and golf clubs and a basketball stolen from an unlocked storage room on Osborn Rd between 8 30 a m and 5 p m Tuesday.

British signalman ends shift by setting all signals red

Fred Sherwood, a signalman at Dagenham Dock, turned every signal to red on his final shift. The action halted traffic between London’s Fenchurch Street and Tilbury for two hours, with a shuttle bus service arranged to move passengers. A railroad spokesman said Sherwood was within his rights and notified control before leaving.
