Scottsdale police investigate theft of a stuffed buffalo head valued at 200 dollars from a float at Scottsdale High School. The head belonged to a homecoming parade display and is described as a hunter's prize with legal implications for hunting limits.
Scottsdale born Staff Sgt Elgan L Moore former Marine Reserve member died in a Da Nang area non hostile land mine blast while working on a minefield He had re entered active duty last February after civilian work in Arizona and previously served in Korea and with the 6th Engineer Marine Reserve unit Surviving are his wife Patricia three children and his Michigan relatives Funeral services are pending at Green Acres Mortuary.
A masked gunman robbed Apa Cha Liquors clerk Bruce Morgan at 1 20 PM forcing him to a back room and taping hands and feet then took 76 from the register Morgan's wallet and keys plus a store key ring were taken police also investigated a burglary at Richfield Service Station 7801 B McDowell with 700 in cash and equipment stolen
Scottsdale employs 12 Fire Wranglers from the refuse and equipment division after completing a 10 month firefighting course. They operate a 500 gallon per minute engine from the city yard on 24 hour, three man shifts with radios for Rural Fire calls. future plans add 12 more Wranglers for a new city hall and airport fire trucks.
Legislators completed House passage of 17 tax and education measures amid Senate work. House and Senate differed on property class percentages with 20 40 and 60 against 18 54 and 90 percent. House passed education bill 32 27 as conference committees prepare for final compromise.
State Senator Dave Kret contends that Arizona teacher shortages are a false picture. He cites a counselor at ASU advising students to seek California teaching jobs for higher pay and questions an AEA warning about mass departures. He cites a 46 state survey suggesting Arizona has a surplus, and criticizes tax-supported universities promoting exit.

Police say an underworld plot to assassinate Arkansas Governor Winthrop Rockefeller was thwarted in Texas after intensive interrogation of a prisoner by state police in Texas and Arkansas. Police Chief Melvin James called the plot valid true and authentic.
A winter storm moves through the Central Rockies affecting Prescott Flagstaff Grand Canyon regions with light snow in high elevations while Phoenix sees only minimal precipitation. Separately Kennecott Copper Co rejects Mansfield backed plan for a joint management labor fact finding panel to end a five month copper strike.
Scottsdale School Board members say a six percent budget cap, tied to a six to ten percent growth provision in state tax reform, would hamper kindergarten programs and teacher salaries. They warn continued growth needs about 95 new elementary and 25 high school teachers annually. A board meeting is set for Tuesday at Kaibab School to discuss the issue.
